Why does distance to empty vary?

Just curious. I always gas up at the chevron by my house. Alway top off. Wait 30 secs for gas to settle and top of again. And my distance to empty always says 337 miles. I get that once I start driving depending on conditions that can vary greatly but here’s the question.
ONE time I filled up at a 76 station and it said 353 to empty and I was like what the heck? It didn’t take more gas.

And my default 337 as usual is guessing I’m going to get 16mpg?

    Hope I’m wording this right.

So why did it vary one time?
Is the initial number an estimate by the computer cause I haven’t drove off the gas station. Yet

Mine is always 385 as well. When I first got it, it was 415, but haven't seen that since.

Driving habits and engine load has a lot to do with it. If you were averaging 12 to a gallon because you’re hauling or heavy on the gas pedal, it will compute different miles to empty.

Mine was always 385 at 87 fuel, when I filled with 89 recently, it jumped to 415.

It's going off your most recent mileage assuming you'll stay consistent. We're never consistent however, so it'll always vary.

I think they specifically recommend not "topping off" the tank...

It probably depends on your recent driving trends. If you were doing a lot of city driving before pulling into the station it would be lower. Come straight off the freeway and it should be higher.

Mine has said 280 for a year or so now, which is right on the money mpg wise. Disconnected the battery the other day and it shot up to 380 on the next fill up. Obviously it didn’t magically get better mpg and it dropped progressively as the tank was emptied, guess it needs to recalibrate as time goes on. I’ve hand calculated and it is pretty consistent.

Mine usually shows 385, but what gets me is my mpg average. Swings from 21.3 to 23.1 . Same gas, same driving habits, same route. I am happy with the mpg’s, I’m sure it will take a hit when I get some better all terrain tires. Running the stock tires for now.

Friendly neighborhood FYI. When filling up, once pump stops, one should not continue to try and squeeze more fuel in the tank.

You need some wriggle room in your gas tank to allow the gasoline to expand, otherwise the additional gas could evaporate into your car's vapor-collection system and damage it, leading to a vehicle that runs poorly and has high gas emissions.
