Not gas vapors but liquid, which will damage the canister and other valves / sensors .

 

Mine is always 353 yet I average almost 21 mpg since I've owned it.

I don't know how often the DTE re-calculates. I don't have that feature on my older Tacoma, but do on my F-150. But the DTE is based on the fuel mileage you got while driving the last few miles.

Depending on driving conditions your truck could be getting 4 mpg for while, or 40 mpg for a while. Yes, I've hit 40 mpg in my F-150 while driving down mountain passes for 30-40 miles. And I've gotten 4mpg over other stretches of road. I find the DTE calculations used on many newer trucks to be useless information. It takes the most recent MPG you've been getting, combined with how much fuel you've used and gives an SWAG (Scientific Wild Ass Guess)as to how far you can continue to drive.

The problem is that your trucks computer cannot take into account road and driving conditions in the future. You could have been driving for the last 300 miles getting 20mpg and only used 15 gallons of the 21 in the tank. Your readout might tell you that the DTE is 100 miles. Suddenly traffic on the interstate comes to a near standstill because of road construction or an accident. Now you're idling and going no where, or pulling up 100 yards and idling for 15 minutes before driving another 100 yards and only getting 3-4 mpg. In reality you'll run out of gas in 20-25 miles at that rate, not 100. I've been in that situation several times. One reason I don't wait for the low fuel light to come on or wait until the DTE light gets below 100 miles.

This is what doesn't make sense to me. 21.1 gallon tank, 21mpg= 443.1 miles.
My truck usually averages 17.5-18.5MPG which is pretty much right on the money for 385 till empty.
I do a lot of short 5 mile trips which is why my MPG isn't too good- work is 5 miles, I'm a volunteer firefighter- the station is 2 doors down from my work. 10 miles to my buddies house. 2 miles to the grocery store.

385 every single time. 91 octane since new and always been around 16mpg.

 

DTE is calculated by your last tank of gas and mileage. It should vary every fill up. Just like your MPGs vary depending on your driving habits. Its an estimate. If you need accurate fuel consumption numbers for whatever reason, calculate by hand.

I fill up until the pump clicks on it's own. I remember reading a detailed article once on why you should never fill up past that point. Mine always reads 385 miles. I reset the trip and by the time I'm back to EMPTY, it's been more like 300 miles.

 

Mine is 99% at 385 but once I saw 405 and once I saw 265.

I’ve never even come close to hitting 385 actual miles in a tank but I have hit 300 a few times.

 

The expansion thing is a little overstated IMO. I crewed on a racing team that ran a fourthgen Camaro in endurance races (8 to 12 hours). The fuel filler is on the drivers side, the expansion chamber on the tank is on the passenger side. So we would jack the drivers side up until the car was past 30º lean, then fill the car up, before the beginning of the race. We could get several (3 or 4) gallons of gas in the expansion area, and honestly I do not see the fuel expanding that much. Maybe all cars don't have the same expansion area.

 

Fill your truck up past full, park it in the summer sun for the day and see what happens. This is what the manufacturer is trying to avoid.

You guys owe me 1/2 gallon of gas since I went to the dealer on Saturday and among other things I have checked the location of the charcoal canister in the taco (16-18). The canister is located ABOVE the tank and (was told and shown the location) that over-filling the tank will never cause the liquid gas to get to the canister.
Yes, IT IS a bad idea to over-fill the tank since the gas needs to expand and could cause increased vapor pressure on the canister valves.
Been told many times, from a long time ago, when filling the tank to wait till it click-stops, wait for a few seconds for the gas foam to settle and (without removing the nozzle) add more gas till click-stops again. Can be done 1-2 times.
Also, since I live in the devil's ass (AZ), I always gas in the night time or very early in the morning when the gas is cold and less expanded. If you gas in the hot time of the day, the gas is larger by volume (not too much really) and for the same tank volume that you pay, you will get less gas, about 1 gallon for a 35 gallon tank.
Never measured to be exact, was told about this. What I know for sure, you can extinguish a cigarette in a bucket of gas (like in water) and not catch fire...but I had to change pants to find out.
