FWIW my sticker from purchase under Tow Package says, "transmission OIL cooler" right on it.

I think I'll just run it until it explodes.... that or do what the owner's manual says. Hmmm.

So I just looked through the 2015 Maintenance Guide for the Tacoma. Schedule A (4.0L) says to change "Transmission fluid or oil" at 60k and 120k if you're "Driving while towing, using a car-top carrier, or heavy vehicle loading". The only reference to the Transmission any time before that appears to be under regular maintenance and it only says to check for transmission leaks. The manual does not go beyond 120k miles.

So it would appear that Toyota recommends every 60k if you tow.

obviously you don't know tractors or farm equipment either. some hydraulic systems on these equipment is one big unit. so the hydraulics are not only for the levers and rams. they also lubricate the trans.

Haha yea. I was just trying to give the other guy some defense. Sorry for being off topic. Just thought it was funny.

I have the 2.7 with 4-speed automatic. I drain and refill every 60k which changes out only 3.5qt of fluid (about 25% of capacity) but 98% of my driving is light duty, mostly highway at 60mph. The fluid comes out bright red so I know it's still OK but drain & fill is cheap maintenance every 60k.

    Old thread...
Crom helped me back in 2016 with the R&R/ Flush of the tranny fluid in my 2010 4x4. This was at 86,000 miles (I think)... My truck shifted much nicer afterwards! Now, five years later, and with 129,000 miles now, still on the same fluid, no problems at all!

More misinformation from Captsolo-FordF150. He's running a sealed transmission in a 2005 4runner that uses WS.

At that rate you'll literally spend more on servicing the transmission than you'd spend to replace it. I've never seen any proof that servicing a transmission at all has any effect on how long they last. Neither has a transmission shop, but they like to keep you coming back.

I know guys who did the service at 50K, 100K, and still had to replace the transmission at 150K. I know quite a few who drove 400K without ever changing the fluid. Seen lots of them go 200,000-250,000 on factory fluid and end up in the scrap yard for other reasons before the transmission died.

My dad started driving in 1936. I started driving in 1974. Dad worked in sales driving 40K/year. Between us we have several million miles with ZERO transmission fluid changes. I have almost 1/2 million miles on the 3 vehicles in my driveway including 214,000 on my Tacoma. If the transmission dies tomorrow on all 3 I'm way ahead money wise by not having them serviced all these years.

    Sooo...

Anyone have any luck having their dealer "check" fluid? It seems the default answer I get from them is "you shouldn't need to", but surely there is some value in making sure you're fluids aren't burnt and that you're topped off... I bought my truck used and aside from having the transmission cooler, I have no way to know what type of use it got/towing done before I owned it.

I had an 06' that I decided to have the dealership remove and replace the trans fluid at 75k... (anal retentive). It solved the clunky shifting issue immediately.
Sold that in 14' and bought an new Tacoma. Two weeks later I did the check for trans fluid method (jump wire) and made certain it was topped off. 56k later, no issues.
I may do my fluid at 100k on my 14'

    My $.02
