Why does my 04 Tacoma is a 5 bolt pattern

    Because you chose to have a 5 lug.

    There are 3 variants, but only 2 of which share the same platform.

    5 lug, which is what you have, and only comes in 2wd, with different rear suspension (spring under)

    6 lug, which is based on the 4x4, but also available as a 2wd (prerunner), sharing the 4x4 frame/suspension (spring over)

    Also, when it comes to the 4 cylinder, the 2.4 is available on 5 lugs whereas the 2.7 is available on 6 lugs

    Might have misunderstood your post but AFAIK 5 lug 2WD are not Prerunners. 6 lug 2WD are Prerunners and share the same suspension as their 4WD brethren. Yeah?
