Why does my F150 work truck get better gas mileage than my Taco?

You may BS your post, I do not, First two weeks in the SR 4x4 V6 yielded better than 25 mpg on three round trips from Carson city to Vegas.
Divided miles by gallons used. CC set to 67mph.

FYI, the SR came with hankook highway tires, but if your truck could not do it, it did not happen. What ever troll...ignored.

I speculate that it's a weird fluke of physics that is at play. Historically, most midsized and compact trucks got equal to worse mileage than their full sized counterparts.

One factor is aerodynamics - the height to length ratio is worse in small trucks than big trucks. A small truck is very nearly as tall, with as much or more ground clearance, but not as long. All of that increases drag. The Tacoma happens to be one of the least aero vehicles on the road. The other factor is where each engine is within their relative powerband. Smaller motor with more drag to pull on the freeway = less efficient.

Unrealistic claim gets questioned…cries troll. Ok dude lmao

Edit: how about a pic of your dash mpg after a tank of gas? I’m not even buying you’re getting 21 now with e load tires unless it’s all downhill

I get around 18 mixed driving in my 2017 V8 screw. It’s on 33’s, 3.31’s. When I haul my Tacoma with the Ford I get better gas mileage than my 09 Tacoma did by itself on 33’s. Not to mention so much more beans, comfort and usability.

This is why. Manual trans is worse that an auto for mpgs and comparing it to a 10 speed then you will definitely see a difference.

Rear end plays a bigger part. I sold Fords for 8 years and we typically saw 3.31 and 3.55 as the most popular axle choice. Going 75 you’re not turning 2,550 like in the Tacoma. Add a 10 speed like Ford and GM offer and it makes sense.

F-150 tech is a newer generation than 3rd gen tech.

Saying that I averaged 20.9 mpg on my last long highway trip (600 miles), and that was through mountain roads for half of it. Daily driving is usually 18mpg.

Ford's 10-speed is fantastic in performance cars and fuel efficiency, in my opinion. Toyota now has one, too, it's in the Tundra, and I'm sure it will be in the 4th gen. Since the 10-speed is built for electric hybrid inputs meaning electric motor level torque, it will likely be pretty beefy long term. I expect the 4th gen to hit 20-21mpg due to tuning and a 10-speed. Unfortunately, we'll gain a less-reliable turbo 4cyclinder engine and more standard tech to break along with it.

    You're comparing a 6 speed transmission to a 10 speed, case closed!

It's because we're all making excuses for the Tacoma, as long as we're drinking the cool-aid Toyota doesn't need to try harder. Doesn't the 3rd gen Tundra also get in the upper teens in real world mixed driving? It punches a much bigger hole through the air, has an extra 100hp and weighs 1000 pounds more. I just need a vehicle to be reliable for 150k miles, any problems after that are next guy's problems.

For 20 years the Prius was an ugly, slow car until they got some real competition and customers started voting with their feet - new Prius looks sharp, is fast and uses less gas. Toyota would've said that wasn't possible.

Excuse me sir, don't you come sauntering into this thread with your common sense.

BTW, can anyone tell me why my Vespa Primavera gets better MPG than my Prius?

I get 25-27 mpg at 55-64 mpg at will, on flat ground and little or no head wind. I have stock suspension, 7yr ‘(16) DCLB, stock size tires (265/65X17) running 38 psi.

You are either running under inflated tires, wrong tires (for terrain, size, type), have mechanical issues, different driving environment than when at work, or you’re dogging the chit out of it, among other variables.

Seriously doubt the F-50 beats mine under the same conditions.

My company F-150 with the 3.3 got better avg MPG than either Tacoma I have had. And my current Tacoma is a 2.7, which if I set the cruise at 65 will match the F-150 MPG at 75. With the aluminum body the 4 door I had was pretty light. It was more comfortable on trips, quieter, smoother and shit broke regularly. LOL

All automatics, you couldnt give me a manual these days

My Tacoma gets better MPG than either of the last Nissans I had.

    Work in progress...
Its the same as comparing the new road bikes to the tt triathlon bikes. How can the tt bikes be faster if they are 4-5 pounds heavier, even uphill? It's the new aerodynamics and the electronic shifters. Even the water bottles are made to fit inside the bike frames. I love my P3 but can't help but eyeball some of the newer rides out there.

Depends on the hill and gearing! Bart, I didn’t know you were a bicycle dork! I’m running a mid-80s Vitus 979 in lovely anodized red. I love crushing the weekend warriors on their Shivs or whatever. But if there isn’t a big hill, I can’t keep up at all.
