Why does my garage door opener open by itself?

Not really the same issue but I have had doors not close because the sun was messing up the safety sensors.

 

My parents had that issue. So my dad moved them up to the ceiling right next to each other. Basically eliminating them.

This opener doesn't have them. Which I'm indifferent about.

 

Perhaps a dumb question but I didn't see if you mentioned this. Did you verify that the lock button actually works by trying to use your own remote when it's locked?

 

I'm not sure if I said or not. But yes I did. Mine, my wife's and the wireless keypad. Also when that button is "on" the door will go up but will not go back down with anything including the main control button. Guess its a safety feature so you don't lock yourself out.

 

It will go up with a remote? If so, then you can't rule out a stray signal. Does it have a channel select? If it will only go up with the main hardwired switch, you could try disconnecting the switch to see if it might be causing the problem?

 

that's exactly what I did..there is probably an easier fix but oh well.. they are kind of handy though to trip them to turn the light on when its dark and the door has been opened a while

 

Sorry. Maybe I wasn't clear. No it will not go up with the remote when the lock is engaged. The remotes will not work at all. Only that main control button will raise the door and only raise it when lock is engaged.

 

Yeah I had them on my old house and that's really all I ever used them for. Having kids I can see there worth. But I never allow them near the door if its going down.

 

Check for spider webs in your safety lights. There should be a green light lit up on the body of the sensor. One sensor is a transmitter and the other is a reflector. If those light beams are blocked or misaligned, you can only open the door with the remote. The only way to close the door will be to hold down the wall switch until the door closes. Pretty common problem.

Huh. No windows in my door so think it'd be a lot more difficult, but that's definitely something to think about. I'll throw a zip tie on there.

Finally got around to taking this off.

Going to stop at Sears today to see if I can get a replacement. I did take it all apart and didn't notice anything wrong that looks like it would be bad. Who knows.

It's currently plugged in so if it goes up without the main control then I would know its not that too.

 

Just as a heads up for anyone with this issue or broken main control etc... If it has the four wires attached to the back rather than just the two like all the newer models, then you probably won't find a new one. Only ones I could find where used on eBay. Didn't want used to just end up with the same issue. Checked Sears and they only had a $20 one but only the two wire version. So got a $5 lighted door bell and works just as good. Plus the light is brighter for nighttime use. Just don't have the separate light control or lock now. Oh well. I'll live.

 

I was thinking along the same lines. If another device is using the same frequency it will activate your opener, could be something in your house or a neighbor's. I've seen stand-up house fans be turned on by TV remotes etc.

 

It was the main control button, gone bad. All is well now.

Could be a neighbor's remote though.

 

The other option could be another remote on the same frequency
