Why does my Tacoma engine sound like a prop plane

Picked up a 05 Tacoma DC TRD Sport recently and been doing some work on it.

It has 155k miles on it and in overall good shape IMO.

Anyway just curious on why the engine is so loud on the highway. At idle it’s fairly quiet but as I accelerate it gets louder and louder almost like being in a prop plane.

Searched around and the general consensus is that it’s loud but wondering if this is normal and if there is anything I should check out? I can’t imagine the soccer mom 03-09 4Runner with the same engine being this loud. It would drive a family crazy. I don’t even remember my old 3.4 97 4Runner being this loud. Anyway I don’t expect it to be as quiet as a Lexus but this seems odd to me.

    Thanks

Have any pics of the exhaust/muffler? Mine drones bad on the hwy but i put a loud aftermarket exhaust on it. Maybe the previous owner did the same on yours?

Here's what the stock catback looks like, big ol muffler

here's a pic of the stock manifolds and y-pipe, also would be good to check these. If the PO put long tube headers that are catless, or a catless ypipe, this would make it louder too

I’ll take the 80’s tech over an electric fan any day. An electric fan clutch forced me to do this one day....

I’ve got a 1998 T100 that started to do this at around 400,000 miles. Had it looked at and the mechanic said it was probably the fan clutch. I don’t drive the truck enough these days to bother with it, though, and just left it alone. Not saying that’s your problem, but geez that T100 is loud at 75mph on the freeway, haha.

Do you have a tach reading ? Is the transmission shifting to final drive gear? Wife’s old maxima od solenoid failed, but she didn’t realize It. I drove it, and yep, at cruise the engine pretty loud. Replaced solenoid, and noisy engine sounded like it should. Drives a ‘17 Camry now though.

They went with a more reliable and time tested fan and clutch assembly.

Id go with OEM/AISIN. Be weary if you buy one off rockauto, make sure they send you an Aisin one (it should have an AISIN raised stamp on the housing). I did this, and they sent me a cheap part in an Aisin box. Probably wont happen to you, but id try to go oem on an important piece like this

So is basically whats happening is the fan clutch is free wheeling at highway speed and creating a bunch of noise?
