Never said the 4.7 was remotely recent. Just a data point and a frame of reference that illustrates what the OP is referring to.

Speaking of tunes and octane. Ford has the new tune for the Ranger Raptor that bumps up HP by 50 and Tq by 106. Premium is required, but it's already recommended.

Comparing output per liter from Chevy, Ford, and Toyota, Chevy and Toyota put out about the same HP but Chevy makes significantly more Tq. Ford was cranking out more HP and Tq somewhere in between Chevy and Toyota. With the new tune, Ford is in a completely different league. These aren't race engines and I don't believe that Ford's fuel injection/cylinder head flow/combustion chamber design is vastly superior to Chevy and Toyota's. So is Chevy and Toyota just sandbagging or playing it that conservative? $825 for the Ford tune (which maintains factory warranty) is not going to offset the cost of replacing engines.

it’s an elevation related reason for the reduced octane. Here in Colorado it’s 85/87/91 at most pumps. Some tiny towns only have 85/91.

my supercharged 1GR-FE Tacoma doesn’t mind 91 at elevation and when I drop down lower, I put in the 93.

That's actually a holdover from carbs that doesn't hold for fuel injected cars. You should not use 85 octane in any modern cars.

Recall Toyota's reason for detuning the MT version? There's already a lot of torque management in software for drivetrain survival. TFL's front diff breakage was explained as a gap in the torque management algorithm in a corner-of-the-envelope situation, to be corrected by Toyota through a firmware update. So l don't think there will a TRD performance tune like with the Tundra.

My understanding was that the MTS was too aggressive which caused the front diff fail. The algorithm change is for the MTS, they're not going to detune the engine. A long time ago you could "neutral drop" an auto trans (rev in neutral then put in drive). Even a low power engine could break drivetrain components doing this. Modern vehicles won't let you do this. The MTS was shocking the system just like a neutral drop. They will recalibrate the MTS to soften the engagement.

MTS doesn't control throttle and brakes?

In the TFL interview, Sheldon mentioned the update potentially affecting certifications, so I'm not sure it's just an MTS recalibration. I guess we'll find out when the TSB is released, whether it's for all trims or just OR/Pro.

They won't need to detune the engine in daily driving either way, just limit torque when certain MTS modes are active (which is already happening, one of the advancements of MTS over legacy systems like A-Trac).

Ahh the reverse drop! Big fun! If you timed stomping the skinny peddle to the floor just right it would light em up! You had to do it a split second after going into drive..
