Toyota pickups have always had a hefty price tag relative to the competition, and they have always put the priority on the other things that account for the reliability of the vehicle in general, which was the priority of the typical Toyota market. WAS. So it’s just interesting to see (and point out) how perspectives change.

The stock tires on the Tacoma are so quite the stock audio system can suck and still be heard clearly.

F*&k Yeah! There was always a way to make something fit, especially if it was free or cheap, or F it, that's all there was!

I think it's good to have expectations, but they should be realistic about what we buy and what we pay for things. No expectations is good too... less chance to be disappointed.

Aside from my wifes current 2016 corolla and 2 tundras we have leased over the past few years which next time round going back to a tacoma and will be buying it. I have put in at the very least an aftermarket stereo or the whole setup was aftermarket.
2008 Jeep liberty, 2010 ford escape 4 banger "really hated how slow and lack of power that had" my 2010 tacoma sport access cab all had aftermarket set ups.
I like the idea of andriod auto and apple car play but am not a fan of alexa or Google home and factory systems to me all just suck.
I do go the higher end factoey as a baseline as most of the wireing is already in place so less hassle on installing better quality pieces.
Now only to decide to go with 2 way or 3 front componenets when i get my new taco.

OEM Audio + is a custom tuned amp, front/rear/dash tweeter, and sub. It is completely plug and play with the Tacoma wiring. It will work with Entune, or after market head units.

Edit: All the hard stuff is prewired for you. It is a very easy install.

If you have a JBL logo on the bottom center of your radio then you do have a small sub.

It comes in a few options:
    Speakers only
    Speakers and amp
    Speakers amp and single sub
    Speakers amp and dual sub

My first upgrade to my Taco back in 18 was to put the reference system in with my Entune head unit (speakers, amp and single sub). It made a huge difference in the performance of the Entune head unit. My next foray was to switch head units to the Dasita 9 PX5 headunit with a wireless carplay dongle. Again, a substantial upgrade in overall sound an performance. Two weeks ago, I upgraded the headunit again to the Dasita 9 PX6 for two reasons: integrated wireless carplay (no dongle required) and HDMI out for two headrest monitors for the rear seats (baby sitting for my midget passengers).

I think I had the matching Craig rear window deck speakers which were very good at the time, much better than this piece of crap Toyota installs. Our beater Chrysler 200 sounds much better than the Taco system.

I guess my expectations for sound are quite low then, haha! I was blown away after my 2007 ranger.

My dad has never installed a aftermarket system in a car he owned, he thought the tacoma sound system was great.

The average owner doesnt know or care about car audio. People who grew up installing aftermarket systems tend to get snobby about OEM systems.

Thanks for the info! It sounds like I might be looking for a wireless CarPlay head unit here in the near future.

I finished installing the 20mx speakers today. What a difference. This was the problem all along.

Huge 6x9 with tiny tweeters leaves a huge gap in sound. Adding the 2" speakers filled in the missing frequency.

If I could have done this all over again, I think I would have been happy replacing the 6x9 with 6.5. maybe I'm wrong but that's why I think my older civic sounded better.

If anyone does decide to use 20mx speakers, they come with a metal bracket that can be drilled to fit.

Looks good! I would love to compare the JBL vs the Infinity. JBL uses hard domes for the tweeters and mids, while Infinity uses soft domes (woofers are the same). I think the infinity will sound a bit smoother.
