Why doesn’t Toyota build a 3/4 or 1 ton truck?

Just as the title says. Why doesn’t Toyota build a heavy duty truck? The newer Tundra has a 10.5” rear end but it’s still a semi float axle, if only we could get a full float rear and heavy duty frame.

I've done a mod or two
It is kinda funny that my 93 land cruiser has full floaters front and rear and only has a tow capacity of 5500lb. Toyota makes full floaters currently too but none in trucks in the US

Tough field to break into. Ford Chevy Dodge have dominated that market for decades. It may happen eventually.

Yeah I agree. The American truck pissing match is ridiculous, but you have to pay to play. Toyota did offer the hilux 1 ton trucks back in the late 70’s and 80’s with the 3vz, 20r, 22r, or 22re full float rear 8” diffs. Totally underpowered but they worked. I think with a modern v8 like the 3uz would be pretty solid.

The T100 was available from 93 to 95 as a 1-ton. It had the V6 of the era in it.

I remember those 1 ton Toyota trucks but they didn’t compare with any domestic 1 ton offerings.

I'm sure they feel they don't have to. It's a crowded space and the big three always find themselves in a pickle and start stacking rebate dollars like cord wood hoping to burn through inventory.

There was a guy around town back in the mid 1980's IIRC that had a dual wheel Toyota truck with a utility body on it. He was a general contractor and bought that truck new that way. It was similar to the chassis that they built the campers on. It might have been shorter wheelbase though.

A few OE parts from fancy trucks
Because 'domestic' trucks sell more, with more margin, than actual work trucks.

I'm sure you've heard the mini van moniker 'soccer mom'.

I'd wager 80% of the trucks on the road (all species) that are 'domestic' in nature fall into the 'soccer dad' category.

You know. I have a bed and can haul mulch. If I ever need to.

I mean for the most part that's the way mine is too. 'cept I didn't bother with 6 lugs and 4wd to do it. :D

The tundra is basically a 3/4 truck badged as a half ton. Have you seen the brakes and rear differential up next to an F1Shitty? They are HUGE compared to its domestic counterparts.

Come on now, big brakes maybe. Look at the frame above the rear axle and compare to the frame of an actual 3/4 ton domestic. No comparison as far as chassis.

Also as of now I think Tundra and Tacoma are the only trucks left (midsize & fullsize) sold without fully boxed frame.

Nissan broke into the market last year with the Titan XD. It's pretty much equal to the "big 3" 2500 trucks as far as GVWR and towing. I'd love to see a Tundra HD option. Not that I could afford one. lol

I prefer a partially boxed frame, allows for more flexing off-road
