    1) I hate apple.
    2) I need something that I'm actually in control of (read that as: RUNS FULLY OPEN SOURCE AND NON-LOCKED OUT operating system).

What device falls under this criteria? If you really wanted to be in control you would only run free licensed software! GNU Linux!

And you've hit the nail right on the head with that question!
    The answer is unfortunately, nothing.
    YET.

Of course, I have this really neat thing installed in my car. Its a prototype. Its my second working prototype, third if you count my proof of concept.

It consists of one of these; https://www.96boards.org/product/hikey960/
(they keep promising me that they'll get https://www.96boards.org/product/dragonboard820c/ into stock consistently "soon", and I'd really love to move from the huawei soc to the qualcomm....)
    An LCD of course, https://www.ebay.com/itm/HDMI-LCD-C...h=item2a9a8713ce:g:34EAAOSwRbtaQNHl:rk:4:pf:0
** there are a million options for different LCD's with capacitive touchscreen on ebay/Amazon....
    A USB GPS.

    And of course, the piece that brings it all together. A custom designed mezzanine board that "snaps on" to the SBC, with the following main features;
    TI PCM1865 ADC
    2x TI PCM5142 DAC w/DSP
    ST STPA003 4x52W amplifier
    supercapacitor backed RTC
    MCU w/Cortex M0+
AMFM radio <-- currently reworking this element from a crappy module to an Si4743 (which has proper public documentation!)

Now the neat thing about this is that the whole thing attaches to the car using the standard automotive pigtail connector that you use to adapt *any* radio to that car.
I.e., Batt, Ign, Gnd, 8 wires for speakers, headlight, reverse, SWI1, SWI2, and switchable output power.

I was super interested in getting a touch screen with ACP. But after seeing prices, I seriously doubt id ever buy one. I figured at most they would be 300$ for a nice one, but theyre all like 600-1000$. Considering what they actually do, and the very low powered budget cpu running these i cant bring myself to doing it, I'd rather just keep using my phone.

The cost of the radio isn't as simple as adding up the cost of the components. Car stereo's are low volume, high complexity devices... That's a lot like saying "A Tacoma is only a few hundred dollars of steel, aluminum and plastic".

You don't have to buy a stereo if you don't want to fork over the cash.

Looks nice, and I've always liked Alpine products, never owned any. I don't use the radio often in my 2012, that's why I don't have one.

You cant lie, its not worth the price they sell for. Im not bashing them, they're pretty cool. But they're overpriced right now, for example the thing that makes them expensive is the added cpu, and android os. If you were to buy a normal stereo (just the radio etc) they are around 100-200 bucks for a deacent one, but you add a low end cpu and a touch screen they triple in price.

They're worth whatever people are willing to pay for them... Most of the expenses for Pioneer are software development, not hardware...

Wireless CarPlay actually uses wifi because bluetooth doesn't have enough bandwidth so you would need a USB wifi dongle, not a bluetooth dongle.

So I'm considering doing this to my Hilux, but its very hard to find the correct information as I'm not sure the wiring is the same as a Tacoma (probably not). Pics of the factory sat nav head unit and the steering wheel controls. Anyone know if this is the same as any US models to give me a place to start?

No money, all went to truck...
to answer your question, everyone doesn't have it because everyone doesn't have $1000 lying around.

Definitely cool. I'm a less tech in truck the better mind of person. I prefer crank windows.

I hear that about the crank windows. If I want to make them power I just pull the cranks off and use a cordless drill, cranks on my old Mazda 3 and my scirocco, even my 914 is crank but that is just a fancy VW. So no clock but power windows in my 2015, guess they weren't thinking hard enough on where to profit.

There is nobody manufacturing an Android radio that isn't either cheap (any of those worthless chinese brand car radios), or crippled into uselessness.
