Car thieves are loving the "push to start " feature, people are leaving their keys in the Vehicles. They jump in, start them up, drive them off, without ever knowing where the keys are. they have been left in the console or drink cup holder. What if you were one of ones that left your keys in the truck, and your Insurance Co. said they were not going to pay the claim because you did take " reasonable " care to prevent it.

How would the insurance company know, though?

A manual transmission Tacoma would literally lose a level of functionality with a push to start. There are things you can do with a keyed ignition that you cannot do with their push buttons, namely bump the starter motor which can be necessary at times.

I get that. I didn’t say there weren’t benefits to either. I’m just pointing out that the current arguments I’ve read so far (excluding yours) are ridiculous.

I guess Tacoma owners need to push (manually push that is) start their vehicles more than others. :notsure:

That's funny because it's really the only argument and that just shows how many people don't know what their vehicle is capable of and/or don't use it to its potential.

    I don't understand, I wasn't talking about push starting

The ignition switch in a car with a key is about as reliable as the push button switch. With or without a traditional key, you’re depending on an electrical switch to start your car.

With or without a traditional key, the Tacoma has an immobilizer chip and computer to allow starting. You’re relying on a lot of fancy electronics whether you have push button starting or not.

Leaving your keys in the car will let someone steal your car with or without it being push button start.

Push button start does not mean you can’t push start a car with manual transmission.

Push button start does not mean you can’t have a clutch start cancel system that allows you to use the starter to bump the vehicle. Clutch start cancel -> hold switch vs clutch start cancel -> hold key against switch doesn’t really change much from a functional standpoint.

The battery dying in the key fob does not prevent you from starting a Toyota equipped with push button start.

How do you bump start a truck? You have to push it. That’s why I said manually push it. So yes I’m regards to my post you were talking about push starting.

How is a key more reliable more than a push button start?

Not without actually having the FOB. The FOB physically needs to be inside the cabin for the push start system to detect it and start.

No, I meant bump the starter motor, not bump start the truck by pushing it. If you shut the truck off or stall the truck on a steep slope it can be dangerous to push in the clutch. I'm not talking about highway grades here I'm talking about 50-100% grades where the sweat coming off your forehead is dripping straight down on the gauge cluster. This is when you would put the truck in 1-LO, go key-on, press the button, and bump the starter motor with the key to start the truck and get it rolling safely and controlled downhill all in one step. I've done this many times and it's a real life saver. It's 100% what that switch is designed for, says so right in the manual.

When you park your truck what gear do you leave your manual transmission in?
    Nuff said.

I did, but those are still very difficult because the push start system is encrypted (unlike FOB door lock signal). So even if they intercept the signal, they would need to decrypt it to fool the push start system. Imo it is nearly impossible to do unless the thieves have a contact inside a toyota dealer or something that can give them info. Newer FOBs also only emit the signal for push start if they are inside the car. So even if the thieves relay the signal to unlock the doors, FOB wont emit the push start signal without being inside the car. Theoretically they can of course relay the signal from the car, back to the FOB, tricking the FOB to start emitting the push start signal and than relay that back to the car. But that involves three steps of back and forward signal relaying, where 2 steps are encrypted. Plus push start signal is very weak (since it only needs to work when it is inside the car), so would be very difficult to pick it up and relay, unless thieves are few feet away from the fob. So, I dont think that would be practically possible to do.

I think most cases of push start cars get stolen involves one of the fobs being left inside the car. I had a friend whose push start car got stolen because he left the fob inside the car, in his coat's pocket. They locked the car with his wife's FOB and went shopping. Thieves probably amplified the signal to unlock doors and used the FOB inside to start the car.

Certain makes (maybe Land Rover?) have mirrors that automatically fold in when the key is not in the vehicle. Bad guys driving through a nice neighborhood in the middle of the night try the ones with the mirrors still out. Talk about messing up the morning commute.

I did everything I could think of to start that Toyota. I pushed the button with my finger and I pushed the button with the fob. Car wouldn't start. The fob wouldn't lock or unlock the doors fob battery was dead. It was a rebrand Mazda 2 not an actual Toyota. How would you start one of those?
