Youre supposed to hold the fob against the push to start button. There is a small RF field where it can read the key even when the battery is dead.

Not 100% on other brands, but Toyota won't let you lock the doors if there is an active fob inside the car. It will lock then immediately unlock while beeping three times. To a person who is distracted at the minute (it happens), its easy to assume that the car was locked. In that case, thieves wouldnt need anything to get in the car. Just hop in and go.

An even better question is why doesn't Lexus make a bedded vehicle for all the young sissy boys and let Toyota build a real truck again?

When the battery weakens s its disabled. Not a way to keep cranking if there is an issue. In a wreck they are a pain to locate since you have to make sure there is no way for the car to accidentally start. This leads to cables being necessarily cut.

For Toyotas, the mechanical key that is in the fob can open the drivers door, trunk and glovebox, so getting into the car is not a problem.

For starting the car when the key fob battery is dead:
      • Press brake or clutch pedal.
      • Hold the fob with the "Toyota" or "Lexus" symbol close to or touching the start switch for approximately 8-10 seconds until the "ready" indicator (green light on older models, green dash indicator on newer models) illuminates or flashes (depending on model). Specifically for the Yaris/iA models made by Mazda, the key should be held with the lock button facing up.
      • Push start button, car starts.

Caveat to a previous item I mentioned: If you want to push start a manual transmission car with smart key, you need to have enough power to get the car into "On" mode. You can't do it if the car is completely dead.

If FOB battery drains, you can unlock the car using the key and start the car by pushing push start button with the back of the FOB.

I think the truck has a fuel cutoff system (that activates in response to an accident), so it should not start in either case.

Exactly, earlier I posted because a key is reliable. When the fob fails who says the day? The key.

This is true. It's very hard to lock your keys in the car with smart key. It's possible, but you need to do it intentionally and/or the battery in the key fob has to be dead.

Guess who locked their key in the car when the fob battery was dead... [looks in mirror]

It's like a perfect storm, you don't normally have to take the key out of your pocket, but the battery is dead, so you pull it out, use the mechanical key to open the door, hop in, hold the key up to the button, start the car. Now you're sitting in the car and holding the key, it's not in the ignition, so maybe you set it down and go about your business. Hop out of the car, lock the door with the button... then sadness.

I've still locked my keys in a car more often without smart key than with though.

Well, after a freezing rain event, good luck unlocking the door with a key :). Every system has its limitations. Where are live, we get a lot more freezing rain that FOB battery draining.

I dunno man. I had a 2017 civic Si. Manual with push button start. Never had any issues. Lots of manual cars these days come push to start.

And what about the "I'm being chased by someone so I jump in the car and lock the doors" situation? Will the doors refuse to lock?

The drivers door on the Tacoma has a key hole with or without smart key. On Lexus models that don't, you can pop the cover off to access the lock cylinder.

You can lock the doors from inside the car with the key inside the car, just not using the lock button on the outside of the doors.
