Why don't dealers know what they're talking about?

I would blame it (dealers not knowing what they are talking about) on the consumers. The majority of consumers today don't need or care to know about the car they purchase.

Can't remember where I heard this, but '150 years ago, EVERYONE was a horse expert', because you had to be.

I was wondering the same thing OP. I have nothing to do with Toyota, don't even own anymore in fact, and even I can name most of the configurations available for all the models. Its really not hard for someone to spend some time on their website, if I was a salesman I would make sure I knew each model very well just so I don't get owned by my customers.

The 2 times I've bought from a dealer I was lucky enough to know what I wanted and so did the salesperson. One dealer was the one my brother in law worked in the body shop of, the other was one my wife's dealt with a lot.

I have to say, service managers are the worst. My 2006 Colorado needed a new head this summer. Among the lies the service mgr told me:

"Oh I didn't know anything about an extended warranty on the head" (even though a manager at corporate told me anytime my VIN is put in at the dealer it brings up all the TSB's on the truck"

"I've never seen a head go on these trucks in all the years they've been out" (which he then contradicted 3 months later)

"Oh the cam and timing chain yours needed..I feel it's all due to the head but I can't give it to you, you pay me and GM corporate will refund you the money" (GM told me no that's not how it's done and when I asked him to help me he said he washed his hands of me when he got my $$)

On another note, if anyone knows how to proceed with this, legally or otherwise, please share in a PM.
