Why Don't OBD Readers have ATF Temperature?

    Howdy,

I was monkeying with a new OBD hoping it would have ATF temps but alas another one that does not.

100's of useless information for the average shade tree mechanic but most don't even offer it or need a custom PID that comes with strong language you could brick your ride.....

ATF is one of THE basic things to meter and in the past offered stock or easy upgrades.....

Now it's hit and miss entry of codes which I don't trust anymore....

    Any clues?

    Thanks,

I think it is because the argument on what you are measuring is still being debated.

Does the oil in the pan get measured or the temp of the oil returning from the cooler get measured?

If you are measuring the oil from the cooler, the oil temp will be very close to what the water temp is.

You have to buy the $10 PIDs unless you can program them in yourself.

The snap on obd reader reads the temperature of all fluids but at the cost of 3000 dollars. I use it at work all the time.

I just look at coolant temperature. Am I a fool?

What is the input on torque pro that gives trans temps? I can't find it?

Trans temp isn't related to emissions therefore is not required by standard OBDII regulations. Not many sub-100$ scanners can read ATF. I had a 80$ bluetooth that could do it, but it was 45$/yr for Toyota licensing.

I used a Carvista Reader with OBD Fusion (+ Toyota/Lexus/Scion Pkg) specifically to monitor my transmission temps.

From what my Ultraguage shows it is not the same as coolant temp. Coolant temp is usually around 180°, trans pan temp is usually around 130° and torque converter temp varies from 130°+ dependent on load and throttle position.

Edit: 2nd gen, my bad, didn’t notice it was a 3rd gen topic at first.

$10 plus the $20 Carista OBD connector is only $30 for just as much as a $90 reader can do

Torque Lite and Pro both show the engine coolant as ATF temperature by default. You'll need to enter the custom PIDs in the thread above. I hate paying more for things so I took time and found the codes and how to enter them into the cheapest app, which is Torque Pro

Thanks for sharing my thread. I don't get around here much.

I use OBD fusion. I like it because I can control when I connect to the app. I paid the extra $10 for the Toyota add-ons that gives you two different automatic transmission fluid temperature readings as well as a million other things...

All you need to do is purchase a $20 bluetooth reader and then pay $10 for the app upgrade and you're good to go...
