Why don't people like the push button start?

I meant WHY. I have being using keys to start vehicles since 1968. My 2019 Tacoma TRD Has a push button start. I love this feature. Jump in , push to start , and off we go. No need to fumble with keys.

I notice many 2022 still have key starts, I realize manufacturers do this to reduce the cost.

I run in to a friend who purposely brought her car with keys because she hates the start button, her husband Tacoma is push start. I should have ask why?
Today I will never buy a key start vehicle if new. My door bell is push button.

Curious beside it came that way. Why would you not like a push button start?

For a daily driver I like push button. But, for a weekend performance car there is something enjoyable about a physical key starting the engine, akin to that of a manual transmission.

Only issue I have ever had in all the years is a couple times of no start because of the steering lock not releasing due to being torque locked.

Isn't push to start easier to steal than one with a key?

I saw the web site of the users with the 2020 Toyota Remote connect. Look like some of them have issues.

At least like the old autos you had to crank the handle to start is gone.

My old diesel Isuzu car you had a heat slot you put your thumb on, ( had to turn the key a bit) , when it gets “hot” it tells you the fuel has been heated up, , then you turn the key full on , to start. 4 speed on the column. Always need a running start to go up hills.

    hello again. :)

just to contrast, i have a MT with a regular key so i can insert it and turn it and know what's up rather than waiting for some indication from the heavens that this machine is hearing me. i have a MT for the same reason, to be engaged and involved with the experience at every step. when I'm in my truck my mind is 100% on driving, so i don't have my head elsewhere, and therefore don't need or want the driving to be a distraction from anything else. i don't even really talk when i drive. i never ever use cruise control, all for the same reason. i kind of live to drive, there's just nothing like it for me, and i literally built up my truck to maximize the experience. maybe not for everyone, but if i could drive a race kart around town i would, so this is pretty close [and legal] for me. since you asked.. :burp:

Mine works fine never had a problem going on year 4 now. If I was looking at a vehicle and it had most of what I wanted in it but had push button start I wouldn’t walk away from it.

Some people are scared of change. The other reason is being able to lock up the truck and hide keys while you go run, ride or hike. With push button have to take your keys with you or the doors will open when you put hand near the handle.

Yes! today push button start cars are easier to steal “if” the key fob is near the vehicle vs a key car.
Those computers the thieves use need the signals from the key fob to break the codes. Minutes.
They sell key fob protectors Amazon two for $9.99 prime.
But key cars are also stolen.

See -Ravelco Anti-Theft Device , $649 No one has ever stolen a vehicle with this install. See the demo?

Push to start and perimeter keys do offer a greater level of convenience. Nothing I couldn't live with out, given the trade off is a clunky oversized key fob, which needs a new battery every two years.

Push to start is always drawing power from the 12v battery, that's a negative imo.

Key fobs can be turn off and hidden. Please research this? You can also remove the battery with the key fob key. And hide the key fob key? With the remote.?

The CR2016 or CR2032 button will be easy to carry . Also easy to lose too? Lol

Many things are drawing down the battery, including the anti thief ( lights flashing). Battery clocks, etc. The computer is always sending a signal?

and automatic gear selectors should be on the column. It's closer to the wheel, safer and more convenient.

Manuals on the floor make sense.

I do belive a column shifter in a Tacoma would be cumbersome.

Yeah, get rid of all of that.

Give ma a column shifter manual locks and windows. It's truck after all.

    1. It makes the car easier to steal
    2. It can stop working due to RF interference

Can you still power everything on without starting the engine with a push button? When I’m working on my truck I can’t count the # of times I’ve put it into that mode so everything turns on and I don’t have to start the engine. When I’m working in the garage it means I can check to make sure the lights I just installed are working without pumping out exhaust gasses into the garage and without having to yell over the engine if I need something.

Turning a key feels more like you’re physically connected to the car. I’m not sure I’d go out of my way to get a new truck without a push button but I can see why some people would.

Love the pushbutton start. My wifes Forester has a key and she now wants the pushbutton.
