it's safer to have auto up

i.e. pouring rain and you drive out of a toll booth. you want people to hold the wheel and shift, not hold the up button, shift and have the wheel loose or hold by the knee.

I often open my windows half way down, but rarely half up.. usually when I want my window to go up, it's all the way up!

X2. And the auto up windows have a safety built in. You cant get your arm caught in them....

my old 1st gen altima had auto down only. I rigged it to do auto up as well. just took apart the switch, removed a block that was on there, then had to put in a small nail that would actuate the switch when pressing up (the auto button was deeper in a hole, if that makes sense). I think I also had to give that side of the switch 12v+.

Not sure if you could do this same thing with the Tacoma, but I might try it one day.

btw, nothing would stop that window from going up, so I had to watch my arms

That's what I was thinking too....

It will be nice someday though when all you do is think about how you want the window and it will happen.

    Overrated.

Actually, how difficult is it to install cranked windows if you power windows gave up after the warranty period? Would this be cheaper?

There actually is a law related to auto power up/down.

Any of you guys with power up, put your hand in the way and let the window tap your hand, it should automatically start going down all the way.

Its not a "Law" as much as it is a Safety system.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
    It's probably a simple fix.
You know there is a TSB for those.
It would be easier to fix the power windows probably.

Actually the auto up creates a Unsafe condition just like those unlock all door features

Imagine your wife, girlfriend or even you seeing a guy approaching the vehicle, hit the auto up and before the widow closes the guy grabs the window and the sensor doing it's job rolls the window back down allowing him to reach in and grab whoever is driving :(

Now the way our trucks are set up now, you would roll up the window trapping the guys arm in it then could drive along with the asswipe jogging alongside, think of all the fun that would be missed bouncing the guy off mailboxes if you had the auto up feature

Yeah but if his arm was trapped she could bring him home, think of all those experiments you have rattling around that are lacking a human test subject

My theory on the lack of auto up function on the Taco is the same reason there is no power seats, dual zone auto climate control, rain sensing windshild wipers, navigation option, factory leather option, heated/cooled seats, xenon headlamps that turn when you turn the wheel...

because this is a TRUCK.... a TOUGH TRUCK, and it does what tough trucks are supposed to do... and does it well. It wasn't made to putt around the city looking pretty and enveloping the driver and passenger in lounge-like comfort. It hauls shit and gets muddy, and climbs rocks, and laughs at others that cannot...

    sorry end of soap box.

It's not an issue of safety. All modern electric/automatic windows will stop/auto-reverse if they run into something (shove your hand in there if you want to see for yourself.) My Civic has both auto up and down.

It is all about having Crank windows baby you do not even have to worry about only one side automatically going down. :D
