Why exactly are front spacer lifts bad?

OP, I had some of the same thoughts. I knew what responses I would get. The funny thing is in the suspension forum someone posted their truck with a new lift.....Readylift spacer lift. My first thought well wait for the spacers are bad mmmkay post but it never came. Then I noticed the poster was female.... bunch of chicken sh!ts around here when it comes to females. Just kidding guys. :)

just reread this this entire thread for like the 10th time. Very entertaining and some good information in regards to spacers vs other lifts.

When the time comes for me to lift I would like to revive this conversation.

    I was thinking either:

    Bilsteins w/ Eibach coils
    OME
    Ironman 4x4
    Spacers???
Rear would most likely be AAL

Since I'm just mall crawling like a beast in Oregon.

5100's with stock coils at 1.75 you will like it.

+ 2in wheelers AAL in the rear with 5100's or OME N182's and call it good

    ^these two especially PeeRunner haha.

Coilovers would be awesome if I actually planned to offroad. Most likely it will come down to either the spacers, bilsteins or Ironman I still have plenty of time to decide and more to read up on.

I just find this thread entertaining. I'm not trying to lie on here. I plan on going 100% mall crawling what can I say

The spacer lift is completely different than shocks and coils. Agreed

So what exactly is the threshold we're looking at here.. how much should I spend on a 30k truck? Does the proportion stay the same on a 60k truck? 90k truck?

Does a 4k suspension lift with OEM bump stops prevent your shock from detonating? Is it different detonation at 4k of "investment" versus 400?

This typical TW for you. A few very helpful people and a bunch of A-holes bashing the OP. Had numerous people post up how I was an idiot and was just going to buy a spacer lift no matter how many people say they are bad. Others who said it's a 30k truck and why be cheap, sell my truck and buy a Prius. Others who said anything short of Icon or King suck etc.

After sorting through all the BS I went a route I feel is best for my needs. I ended up buying Fox 2.0 coilovers for $724 shipped. I installed them myself and with alignment I'm out $800. The ride is 10x better then 5100s with ome springs. I'm really surprised more people don't to this route.

Hey guy's.... Just wanted to chime in here if I can. As you al know I work for Maxtrac Suspension and we do make spacers for the Toyota's. I went through all the pages and really liked all of the responses to this basic question. So I thought I would throw my two cents in if you don't mind...Just so you guy's have an idea we sell roughly 600 spacer lifts for Taco's a year and we are one of many companies that sell leveling spacers out there so you can imagine how many are sold a year for these trucks.

I heard some people say that if you make spacer lifts you are greedy bastards that all you want to do is make money and we don't care what it does to your truck.
My answer to that is Yes I do want to make money to provide for my family but hell no do I not care what I'm building. This is a spacer lift for a customer that just wants to make his truck a little unique. He is NOT going to run the Baja 1000 but he wants it to look like the guy's that do.

A picture is worth a thousand words...
I see this picture with the broken shock. We don't have any clue what happened to do that but we can assume it came from a spacer lift???.. I don't want to assume that... There had to be so much force on that shock to do that and for the thousands of spacer lifts sold each year all we can come up with is a picture of one shock... Please don't get caught up in something that we cannot prove...

Are there bad spacer lifts out there?
Yes there is along with bad suspension kits out there too... For every 1/2" of spacer height that equals 1" of lift on the truck. So I see some of these spacers that are 2" to 3" tall and that means they would be a 4" to 6" of lift which would be NOT good for your suspension at all. There is a limit to anything you do...

Run Fox, King, Or Icon or nothing....
YES do run those IF you have the money to do that. They are great ways to go and if you have an extra $1000 to $3000 to spend then that's the way to go... BUT if you don't have a ton of money to spend and you just want to lift it a couple of inches the spacer is a GOOD way to achieve that... NOT best way but GOOD way.. As long as you don't go too tall for the stock suspension...

So bottom line is.... If you're just wanting to get a little lift and put a little bit bigger wheel on your truck and you don't want to run the Baja, spacer lifts will do the job... If you want performance by all means install a kit that will handle all of the extra stress when off-roading.. Remember it's not a $300,000.00 race truck and everything has it's limitations...

I really do hope this helps...

P.S. I've been in the off-road industry for over 30 years... I've seen it all over the years...

Cool to hear from someone who actually builds these.

I'm curious why we don't see more spacer vendors supplying a bump-stop spacer as part of the kit. It seems like it wouldn't increase the cost much and would reduce the chance of dramatic suspension failure in off-road conditions?
