I would still take a manual offroad any day over an auto, but I'm also not trying to crawl boulders like what was in those videos. I think manuals are more rewarding when you do accomplish a difficult trail and therefore I enjoy them more, but that's me.

But without a gear reduction "crawl box" a manual Taco is going to stall out every time it attempts a boulder climb like that or its going to burn its clutch to the point of failure trying.

If it's an underpowered vehicle than I'd do a manual for off road. Otherwise mine is an auto.

Look into all the high speed trophy trucks, just about all are auto because the manual has more slop in it compared to the auto.

Maybe it's the different types of off roading. 20 years ago I did a ride along on the Rubicon and back then you never saw an auto. Anyway... day to day, I prefer a manual in a truck and a sports car, my mini van can have an auto.

I am a fan of the manual transmission.....sad to see it fading away from pickup trucks, but my MT days are done now anyway.

Nice that TW offers a place you "better people" can congregate and share the love, since I think much of the rest of the world could care less about how great MT's are.

    No scarcasm.....well maybe just a touch....lol.

    Cheers.

Lol, we have like 5 trucks a week getting tranny and engine rebuilds. These are newer UPS Freightliners with Chevy 6.0 gassers. These trucks are only at 90,000 miles max before they have one or the other break, or both.

If you drive on the beach a lot, you will prefer a auto. Unless you like power shifting :burnrubber:

Light off-roading is it really doesn’t matter. Rock crawling, it does.

Well to be honest, I do miss driving a manual but the way the automatics allow you to adjust your max gear, it still gives decent control of gearing. But at the same time doesnt kill your left foot in traffic lol.

Living in the LA area automatic really is the best to go considering traffic. But it is a pain going down steep slopes and having to ride the brakes pretty hard. Havent had any issues gaining traction tho with it so its give and take.

I think the MT people would agree about having a better time with a AT here.

Gear ratios in the transmission. 4.30 rear end. People underestimate how much difference gearing makes.

Done it. Don’t bother me doing it in a manual. I don’t even think about it. If you are any good at driving a manual, it shouldn’t require thought, it just happens instinctively.

I could probably make a better living near a city but I'd have to make a hell of a lot to put up with that shit every day.

Yeah , best to just keep it in 1st and coast. Pisses the guy off behind you that sees you leaving all that room ahead of you, but they dont have to brake when you are doing it and they figure it out eventually.
