This may not be the correct forum, but what is the advantage of a flat bed truck for off roading? I would think you would want the bedsides to help hold in your contents.

What I see most people do it for around these parts in snow mobiles, but I've never seen a taco with a flat bed, just dmaxes and such.
I think it looks awful but if it had a purpose can't bash it

You also gain a couple of feet in bed width It's tough to carry 8x4s in smaller trucks, so with the bed sides extending over the wheels that no longer a problem.

I'm guessing that in many cases it was cheaper to replace a damaged bed with a flat bed than go back original.

Not a Tacoma nor is it complete, but here is mine. It is minimalistic and holds whatever I need to go wheeling. A full bed would be the first thing to get wrecked. A flatbed is modular. I can weld anything to it in the location I need it, whether it be tie down points, storage, mounts (spare, hi-lift).

Here is mine. I kinda did a "truggy" bed but I used grating for the floor material as it has an infinite amount of tie down points20170116_194338.jpg 20170116_194320.jpg 20170119_200355.jpg
I used to also be a long bed but I didn't like the wheel base so I shortened it up which mentioned I had to ditch the bed anyways.

Mine was going to be a bobbed bed, but then as I was taking the bed off to work on the rear end, I realized the last thing I want to do I lift that bitch back over the rear and then have to deal with replacing stripped 30 year old mounting bolts.

It worked out as I had a shitload of spare 2"x2" tubing to make the bed frame.

I like it. My little bro had a lifted '86, got rear ended and the bed actually came off, everything was a rusty mess.
