Why go 17" over 16" rims?

    265 is a bit wider than I'd like. I'd prefer the taller, skinny 255/85 or 235/85 if I had to.

    Fox/Dakar with Relentless goodies and stuff
    265 is a stock tire width on the sport and off-road and less than 0.40" wider than a 255. Why the aversion to it? It's a great size and can be had in a C rating, unlike the 255.

    Isn't the stock size on a 2012 OR 265/70/16? Its not much of a bigger tire to go up to 265/75 only an inch (30.6 vs 31.6). Kinda the whole point was to get bigger tires.

    No I have done some decent wheeling too and never got any rub except a tiny bit when reversing at full lock. I got some rub on the mudflaps while on the trails so I took them off and then it was all good after that. It can make a difference what rims you run though.

    Correct. Stepping up one tire size to 265/75R16 or 265/70R17 is very popular and wont rub.

    My 07 had 18" wheels when I got it and I knew I didnt want those on there so I went with 17"s simply because 17"s are what my truck came stock with.

    When I'm towing and /or driving over 70 mph, I wish I was still running 265/75/16. All other times, I'm glad I have 255/85/16.

    The only reason I would go to 17s is if I was going to run 35s. The modifications required for that aren't worth the minimal gains to me.

    As someone who is running 16x8 wheels and 285/75 load range e tires, if I had to do everything over again I'd go with 17's and 285/70's in a lighter load range. The 16x8's look a little skinny to me, even with 285's. Something about the stance just leaves more to be desired. And the ride, the ride is horrid. For me, the load range e tires are not even close to comfortable until you get down to about 20-25psi. Running that pressure with a tire that damn near weighs 60lbs is just stupid, I get reasonable mileage but I have to run 45-50psi to get it. I know it could be better. When these tires go bald I will definitely be purchasing the same wheels I have now in 17x9, and run the lightest load range 285/70 I can find.

    I like the ride. I drive on very rough roads regularly and even at 40 psi, the ride is reasonable.. On smaller load C tires at 35 psi the ride was miserable. I also spend a lot of time in places where I need to be self-reliant. Load E tires provide a great deal of peace of mind. I have driven a lot on aired down 265/75s and the performance is not even close to the 255/85s.
