I own a 2018 Tacoma SR Double Cab with steel wheels & installed a set of 2017 Tacoma TRD Sport wheels & tires that I bought off Craigslist on Tuesday. My plan was to live with the error/tire light till Saturday when I would take them to the tire store & get the TPMS Sensors programed. My question is why haven't any error/tire lights come on the dash? I mean besides the obvious appearance improvement there has been no difference between the original steel wheels & sensors installed & the new wheels & tires I installed

I didn’t know you had to reprogram them. When I switch out the snow tires/ wheels on my wife’s Acura MDX, I just put them on and go. I assumed they were the same on every vehicle.

The old wheels are in the garage where I park the Tacoma but I’ve driven the truck to work & back & run errands. Probably put 150 Miles on the new wheels & tires

It took some time (I believe a few days) for my light to come on when I switched from the stock steel wheels to the OR wheels with no sensors. It was not immediate.

Doesn't that make you wonder how they can be such a touted safety device?

It did until I put the stock wheels w/TPMS back on, the light went out right away. So perhaps the computer treats no communication differently than low pressure?

Don't think so. When the battery dies the dash lights up. Not because it knows the battery is dead, but because there is no signal.

Can you check the tire pressure on your dash? If yes I’d say the new sensors have been paired to your computer.

Nope, Cant check the pressure on my dash. I've tried all the buttons on the steering wheel but don't think that's a option on the SR model. I think all we get is the idiot light on the dash for low tire pressure

It takes 40 minutes for the Tacoma system to register a fault on the dash.

It has to do with the programming, this is normal for Tacoma, no other Toyota model does this.

Thanks for the reply but I have a question-
40 minutes of continuous driving or 40 minutes accrued driving? I've logged over 40 minutes accrued since the wheel swap.

40 min of continuous driving, I have 2 sets of wheels for my truck and it does same thing, light will not come on unless I drive it 40-50 minuets on the set of wheels that isn’t programmed in the truck

That's correct, my SR didn't have anything but the warning light. I replaced my wheels with new tpms sensors as well, and it took about a week for the light to come on. Still on, I'm gonna get them to sync my new sensors when I go for my first service appt

Edit: just saw you have an 18, they have the info cluster by the gauges right? There may be a way for you to check the pressure then. My 2017 SR didn't have that info cluster

I doubt it, I haven't seen anyone with a sensor in their spare. I don't believe either of the 3rd gens I've had had one in the spare

Mine took a while to realize the sensors were gone as well. Such a waste of money imo, did the bypass and couldn't be happier to not have to worry about them

When I ran my winter tires set on my 3rd gen it was 40 minutes like clock work, even the timer would agree.

The light didn't come on for an entire month due to my short commutes.

but then you park next to the original tires and it picks up the sensors because they are close.

2008 or 2009 was the last time Tacoma's had a Spare with TPMS.
