    As mentioned you should be fine with the sport. I'm happy with the places I've gone with mine. Since I'm a pic whore heres a few of mine playing in the snow.

    Kind of expect to see Hoss and Little joe riding down through the pass on the second pic. Beautiful country.

    Well., I have to put my .02 cents in since I had to make the same decision. I'm in upstate NY. I like the Sport because of its looks. But got the Off Road because while I don't off road now. I would like to at some point and want to have the ability of a locker. I do alot of off roading in my native country of the Dominican Republic. Over there I have a beat up 99 Terrano that I use to get me around and trust me the LOCKER is essential. It will be that one day that you need it that you will curse the day you made the decision not to get it. As far as getting it. Pick a color, exactly the color you want with the specs you want. Your dealer or a dealer should be able to find it and deliver it to you. If they don't, they are not doing their job.

    LSD is better for snow because of the fact it is alwys engaged. Your theory of 4wd and 3wd is flaud, without a locker, and with LSD when 1 wheel in in the air, it gets all the juice, so in effect you are losing both rear wheels.

    Get the sport for what you are doing tho, as the locker needs to be engaged, and like someone said, only works for crawling speeds

    I would say you can't really go wrong with either. Speaking from experience I'd advise going with the color and style you want more. I've rushed this decision in the past and constantly wished I had chosen a different color. You'll be looking at the truck way more than you will be wishing you had chosen a different style locker.

    I lived in Wasilla AK for a couple of years, thats before Palin and before everyoone in the US knew where that was. The trails around that area are awsome, I bought my first yota up there, a 81 trk 4x4 with a lot of miles onit and even more rust than miles, i bought a set of good mud tires and just went wheelin, went most places i wanted to go. I have an 07 db cab 4x4 trd offroad with the locker and i love it. The locker comes in handy if you everhave to pull somone out. I was in northern MN on an ice fishing trip last wkend when they got 18 inches of snow, was i glad i had the locker then, that was the only way i could get my truck moving in that deep of snow. Its your personal choice, you are the one forking out the pennies for a great truck whichever way you go. good luck:thumbsup:

    Im pretty sure you can do a mod to be able to use your locker in 4hi and 2hi, I know you can do it on 1st gens, but im not 100% sure about 2nd gens.

    The locker is not just for crawling speeds...
    If you really like the sport go with it, and If you think after you get it that you really want a locker, then add one later

    If this has already been answered, forgive me, but not going to read through 3 pages of this thread.

    Without lockers a 4x4 is really a glorified 2-wheel drive truck. One wheel driven up front and one in the rear. with a locker you are putting equal power to both wheels on the same axle. For true 4-wheel drive you would need lockers front and rear.

    You can read more about diffs here http://auto.howstuffworks.com/differential.htm

    I've done the locker mod with my 06' and works wonders. I often go wheeling with just the locker engaged in 2-wheel drive and am able to get through some pretty crazy stuff. It's also a blast on gravel/sandy roads, or in my cul-de-sac when it's covered in snow...makes it really easy to do donuts :)

    LSD = daily driving
    Locker = Offroad

    That's it in a nutshell. The LSD whether it be the mechanical or brake actuated in the 09 trucks - is beneficial for daily driving traction control.

    The locker is best for offroading because you only use it (from factory) in 4lo range. Sure - there is a modification to make the locker work in 4hi - but, if your truck is under warrantee and you break something using the locker in 4hi, you'll have a hard time getting the repairs fixed under warrantee knowing you defeated the Toyota safety mechanisms.

    If you want the benefits of both....get the SPORT and put a selectable locker (like an ARB) in the front diff.

    you're right, there is a mod for it, but the locker is DESIGNED for crawling speeds. I have not done the mod, im not good with wires n shit... but I have heard various arguments on either side about wether or not its good for your drive train to be smashing down the road with the locker engaged...

    To me, the locker is for crawling

    i dont go smashing down the road with mine engaged either...as it drastically changes the performance of the truck...

    i modified mine because i wheel my junk...should i break something and lose the ability to be in 4wd...it will be beneficial to be able to lock the rear end in 2wd...

    as for it being designed for crawling...the 01-04 trd's all have elockers iirc...even the prerunners...who dont have a 4lo to shift into
