All else equal, DI reduces fuel consumption by ~10%, and Atkinson lobes on an Otto engine reduce consumption another ~10%. These numbers are based on midsize sedans, since there is a large sample size in that group. Who knows how they apply to trucks.

Therefore, I estimate that a 4WD, 3.5L, 6AT Taco will return 26 MPG highway, 27 MPG tops if they worked some magic in the rear diff and aero. Hell, the Highlander hybrid is Atkinson PLUS a CVT and hybrid system, probably better aero than the Taco, and only gets 28 MPG highway; there's a reality check for you.

Is there a deep web site for trolls that make inane remarks on automotive websites that result in long threads?

If so, you must be a leader in the game.

Just thought I'd throw this post in to help you out.

PS...... Too bad this forum doesn't activate the 'block poster' feature that allows individuals to 'hide' other individuals posts from their view. You'd be my #3 block.

Tossed the PS in to help your 'they don't like me' cred. That has to be part of the game too............

The only thing I don't like is the huge grill, everything else looks great. It will have to grow on me.

Honestly, the new Tundra isn't too bad if you color-code the grill.

    LOL

I would like to be proven wrong, might get 27-28 hwy with a diesel. I highly doubt a gasser will get it in a truck platform. I know it is a different animal, but the 3.5 V6 Lexus RX 350 AWD is rated at 26 HWY. The Taco is a bit heavier, a bit less aero...soooo... time will tell.

Look at the bright side folks.....the 2GEN tacoma should hold exceptional resale value due to all the 3GEN bulbous grill hatred.

Toyota's sales numbers would disagree with you. I guess that's why you don't work for Corporate...

Many (me included) simply do not care about the shape of the bent tin. As long as the tin is present and it is a Toyota truck.

And it does not really matter how whimsical the tin is shaped on a GM Truck (or Nissan for this matter or Ford, whatever) . Who really cares if it is "angular" or "slick" or something else.

Toyota sells trucks. Others often sell looks. Thus sales numbers. It is all in saying - fool me once...

    Cheers.

To be fair, and I personally don't have anything against the 3rd gen Tacoma, your comment can be easily summed up in a single word: Sales.

Toyota has been making a MINT off the Tacoma, 1st and 2nd gen. So why take a big risk and make a major overhaul? It could potentially cost them BIG really. Makes smart business sense to just make simple changes and see how those go. That's what they have been doing for the past 10 years: Small changes in the 2nd gen. Just my $.02 worth.

I agree with you on that! The front end on the new 3rd generation looks similar to a Dodge and the rear end tailgate, tailights and interior dash look like a Ford. That Mitsubishi truck that once was has some similarities to the 3rd generation as well.

. You say 27 mpg, I say I would like to see 28 mpg. Now, why does the highlander hybrid get " only" 28 mpg. Maybe, because it weighs over 4800 lbs, nearly 700 ( compared to gen 2 ) to possibly 800 ( we don't know the weights yet) of the new Taco.
There is a reality check for you.
Personally, I think your guess of about 26, maybe 27 with a generous federal wink is more realistic. That's similar to a Venza with the "old" 3.5. Technology looses out to aerodynamics.
I will be disappointed if they don't equal or better 26 mpg of the 325 hp f150, even in 2 wd.

The front grill looks will be inconsequential if the motor has over 300 hp and it's substantially lighter. (It already is lighter then the "new" Colorado, model for model.)It won't matter because most will only see the rear end as it passes.

As everyone knows, EPA and real-world are very different. The 4.0L Tacos are averaging ~1MPG better than the 2015 F-150s on Fuelly, so the 2016 Taco will surely widen the gap.

According to Fuelly, the current fuel economy champ for any V6 midsize or fullsize truck is actually the Ram 1500. The 3.6L is averaging nearly 20 MPG, obliterating everyone else by at least 10%. And of course the diesel is even better.
