Why is it so hard to find 4x4 DC Long Box?

    Not enough...
After reading countless pros and cons threads on the topic of Short Bed vs Long Bed, I've decided to go with a Long Bed for the following reasons:

    1. Extra cargo capacity will definitely come in handy on long trips with 4 people and 60lb of dog in the truck. Large dog crate alone will take half of the short bed!
    2. Smoother Ride (questionable, but makes sense. Longer frame more flex?)
    3. 6' bed is definitely better for sleeping in when camping.
    4. Looks better
    5. Looks better with a shell
    6. Looks even better raised

I plan on doing some moderate wheeling here and there and some people are saying that short box is better for that. Shorter truck easier to get around, but I've seen people wheel much bigger trucks.

Anyway, emailed a bunch of dealers with the specs: '14 / White / TRD Sport / 4x4 / DC / LB / JBL, if available.
Only 3 replied back, and all 3 said the same thing. Only 2 of these trucks in CA, they can have it transferred for a fee, and the best price I've gotten so far is $34,600+whatever the transfer fee is.

Now that I look around, the only long bed DC TRD Sports i see are all PreRunners. Why is that?

Should I just re-adjust my expectations and get a short bed? Could probably get a much better price on it too, since there are tons of them available?

Proximity is a funny thing. I guess prerunners are just that popular out there. You should just take a vacation somewhere you can find a DCLB, and then drive it back :)

This. I bought my truck in San Diego and noticed prerunner sports were very popular. Had to shop around a bit.

Just to clarify on point #1 though, DCLB do have more cargo area but around 200 lbs less actual cargo capacity than a DCSB. Good luck in your search.

Super common in PA too. if the dealer wants to charge to get the truck there I'd tell them to f*** off. I wouldn't pay a penny extra to get the truck I wanted

Plenty here in the central Va area. Time to take a road trip or deeper research on the Internet. No way pay to have it brought to you. Should not be to hard to find where they are at and talk to that dealer. You are the buyer make him work as it is his salary.

    Thanks, everyone!

There are a couple available in Vegas, but I don't know how I feel about purchasing out of state. I don't mind doing it, but i don't want to drop ~$3,000/tax/license/registration/smog out of pocket when I register it in CA. Much rather having it all rolled into my loan and just spend cash on a nice Leer shell.

Ordering from a dealer is around 6 week wait and i'll need a rental to get around in the mean time. If I go this route with a long term rental, I may just end up waiting for TRD Pro to come out wile driving a rental. Unfortunately Pro seems short box only too, but there are trada-offs (see below)

I spent all day looking around and actually open to getting a Baja, if i find one i like. Also short box only, but the trade-off is that it already comes with a nice-ish lift and wheels/tires. Few less things to worry about the first couple of years and will get me from 0 to off-road bumper faster ;)

Don't know if I am over analyzing this or if the whole short box vs long box debate matter that much. I am, however, planning on driving this truck into the ground so I would like to get all the features that may come handy.

Definitely get what YOU want, especially if it is going to be a long term buy. Personally I wanted an Access Cab because I prefer the long bed and some room inside. The DCLB has a longer wheelbase and short is better for tight trails and even tight parking lots. Try following an old CJ5 Jeep off road in your Tacoma and you will see the advantage of a short wheelbase real quick. In case you did not know the DCSB and the Access Cab with the 6.5 foot bed have the same wheelbase.

As for suspension and lifts there are lots of good aftermarket set-ups but you have to spend some good money on that too. I bought a basic SR5 new in 2012 and put on ICON suspension, and love it! Better on the street and wonderful off road.

 don't get too hung up on TRD/Baja/etc. you can always make mods with the savings between SR5 and TRD and have a better performing truck custom to your needs. (says the guy who bought a used TRD Sport DCLB and added mods anyhow)

Search Autotrader, find the one you want, and start haggling with them. Then do a fly and ride. With the money you'll save, it's almost like a free vacation.

Every year, they close more and more trials here in California. So 4WD is largely not needed, especially in Southern California. Example like in my household, we have a 2013 Subaru Outback to get to our cabin in Tahoe during winter. So there was zero reason to spend the money on 4WD for my truck (Was not spending $30K on a midsized truck) when a 4WD full-sized can be had from any of the big three for under $25K new.

In other news, I was out bombing around on one of my best friends property out here. He has like 25 or more acres of brush, hilly and generally rural land we hunt and fish on. He asked if I wanted to take his quad or side by side RZR around the property. I said naw, I will just tool around in my PreRunner until I get it stuck, never did and was quite impressed how good a 2wd, DC, PreRunner gets around off road. I was actually trying to get it stuck, but with the 4x4 like clearance, it does just fine.

DON'T SETTLE!!! Go get what you want. I bought my Truck in Las Vegas Cenntenial Toyota. They wanted to sell me a truck so badly that I told them my terms and they got me my truck right off of the assembly line. I traded in my 2011 DCSB 4x4 with SR5 and I got me a 2012 DCLB 4x4 with SR5 package. Only reason to get the TRD package is for the Diff Lock and Power outlet in the bed. But I'm moding my truck the way I wanted, and I didn't want to pay for a package that I was about to rip out anyways. I would buy the truck in Vegas versus California because of lower sales tax and they don't charge you for license and registration. They let you do that yourself as an option. So you can save yourself around $3K in taxes if you go buy it in Las Vegas. They also tinted the windows for me for free. I'm also from Southern California, when I saw the sales tax in California when I moved back from Japan, I drove my ass to Phoenix when I bought my second Tacoma.
