Why is my heater so hot?

It's not jeep JK hot, but our hot air setup is very nice. I believe the JK 'meat thermometer in vent' record is in the mid/high 150's.

Good stats. I would like to put a thermometer in my vent. I will have to see if there is one hiding in my kitchen. I would think it is less than 180 degrees as that seems to be our engine thermostat. It is definitely hotter than 111°F.

I have noticed that my heater is very hot also. It’s either really hot or unbearably hot. I usually crank it for a couple minutes then open the rear window and put at 50-75% when it gets down to the 30s here. Otherwise it’s too warm.

Can’t complain though. I had a Jeep before this that had no heater the entire 4 years I owned it. Bought it in the summer, didn’t notice until winter. Neither me or a couple of mechanics could figure out what was wrong. It just blew lukewarm air at best, was never a huge issue other than the few times I really needed it, like the 12 hour drive to New York in a 7 degree snow storm.

 

My AC isn't really adjustable, but the heat is. Yay cheaper trim level.

Yes BUT each of the 3 relays start turning off as the engine warms up. This image is from a 4 runner but I believe the Tacoma is either very similar or the same. Notice that all 3 elements are running below 76c. Once above 82c and they are all off.

Do the electric heat coils come on when it’s cold and you select defrost? Or is it just when the engine is cold and you select hi on the climate control?

 

Engine coolant temp needs to be cold and temp needs to be set to HI, and on any output. Turn the fan to it's lowest speed and you should feel a small amount of heat in 10 or 20 sec with an ice cold engine. The low speed is not required but the heat is more noticeable this way.

 

nevermind my previous post above, just tested the heat @ 164.5 F!
This was with exterior temps of 32deg. at the ocean, high winds. The blower was on the slowest setting, with only the forward facing vents active:

 

Wow! 164.5 degrees. That is pretty darn hot! Thanks for checking this. I wasn't able to find a meat thermometer in the kitchen, although my wife was pretty impressed with my science acumen.
