Why is my mpg so bad around 14-15?!

my mpg is bad.
In tank avg showing 14-15mpg.
Some trips I see I can get around 17mpg but most strips i ride in city and some hwy.
How can I get better mileage?

 

Do you have the ECT button pressed all the time? Bigger wheels?

 

Lead shoes? Colder weather now. Extra stuff in the bed?

 

Was there a change in gas mileage?

 

Either you've got some awful modifications, you never ever take your gas pedal off the floor, or something is broken.

Is the check engine light on?

Nits a nice truck, no mod, going easy on gas pedal, OEM 245 tire(will check pressure tomorrow), usually nothing in bed(have cover to reduce air drag)....so am puzzled. Some trips I do get around 17 miles but M-F work commute on non-hwy roads going about 45-50mpg speed for about 10 minutes to/from work...
Still the avg fuel economy stays between
14-15mpg according to the indicator screen....and Injust had my 15K miles check up ..

On my second taco since 2010 and both drank gasoline for breakfast lunch and dinner.

Granted, I'm lugging around oversized tires. Even when stock these bastards are pigs.

I do know that motors will perform better with higher octane fuel. I'm sure that plays a role with me. I fill it with the cheapest stuff money can buy. I'd pour water in the tank if it had enough contaminants to be combustible.

 

I regularly get 18-20 mpg..and I've got a lead foot..not sure why yours is on the lower end

 

MANNNNN!!! 14k miles I'm still getting 15MPG lol......... since day one. all stock tires

 

I’ve got 630lbs of added weight on 285’s and I’m getting almost 16mpg on the tank.

 

I have 33"'s and get high 14 MPG...

edit: no armor..... yet

 

I have over sized tires and armor and I'm getting 15 mpg... but it's been that way since new/stock.

I live in the PNW and I attribute it to the many, many hills and mountains. I think it's the FL bois who are getting 24 mpg.

Where do you live? How's the weather been?

These engines are much more efficient after they've warmed up. The first 3-4 miles is crap mileage, like 12-14mpg. After that, it picks up to 18-20mpg for me. Even in city driving I can get close to 20mpg.

If you're doing a bunch of short trips, your engine never warms up.

Colder weather, winter blend fuel, headwinds and hills kill Tacoma mileage.

What you are seeing is one extreme, the other, on my truck is 28+ warm weather, @ 50mph or 24@ 68mph. In the Winter those numbers go down to 25 and 21. If I start the truck and just run to the store it can say 12 to 14 mpg. Also, keep in mind, wind speed and elevation have a great effect on these trucks because they are not geared right for a heavy truck.

 

This is a ridiculous question. How does anyone know why. Too many variables.

 

I was getting 17 city and 14 highway. Supposedly turned out to be bank two sensor one which is my air fuel ratio sensor. Mechanic said I had been running rich. From my understanding the sensors can malfunction to an extent without throwing a light. Just filled up with gas and about to see where I sit now.

 

I'm stock everything except the Duratrac tires. I average between 18-19 for my daily commute 18 miles round trip. That seems awful low for a stock truck.
