If they would have resold me another brand new 4cyl 1987 Toyota SR5 4WD stick as a 2018 toyota truck, I would have bought that manual. But NOOOOooooo

Time has marched on and I am happy w/ my 4cyl. AUTO. It doesn't have any bad habits, is well behaved, and does everything just fine. The advantage of the auto is you can go roaring down the freeway 2 hours before dawn, wolfing down cheesburgers and blasting the Pet Shop Boys.

Well, the cheeseburger part is true. The Pet Shop Boys part is made up, mainly to set off the music police! The truth is even worse. I listen to classical music :anonymous:

    Not enough to list
I'm trading my 16 OR auto for a 19 OR Manual. Actually purchased it this weekend, but cant pick it up till the 21st. My first truck was a manual, I converted my 02 z28 to a 6speed manual and my beater ford is a manual. I like driving them and having control. I will say mountain driving with the auto is kinda annoying. I find myself sport shifting it to 4th to keep it from hunting. The auto is fine, just hints. You will catch yourself pushing the pedal down a little to get it to downshift.

They are not equal. One shifts faster and is electronically controlled, the other shifts manually and is more reliable. It’s not even a debate.

More like one shifts exactly when you want it to, the other is a frustration machine. A truck that shifts its own gears is a product of very dark witchcraft, end of story. Chicks dig guys who drive manual. They leap into my passenger seat at stoplights, have to show them my wedding ring to make them get out.

Engine only sounds good above 4500 rpm. The transmission computer is a killjoy that wants to suck all the joy out of your life, like your first wife.

    None.
I've only ever had manual transmission cars. It's hard to explain to people when they ask me why. It's definitely a theft deterrent (as well as a "can I borrow your truck deterrent). I think they are more fun to drive but they do suck in stop and go traffic. I bought my truck through AutoTrader and it amazes me how many are listed as manual but from the pics it's clear they are not. I wonder if it's an attempt to make the ad stand out or a mistake.

I think I’m just bitter I went the auto, same as the rest of the guys with them :frusty:. I should have ditched the double cab and went Access to stick with my 6ft bed and a stick. I couldn’t get the 5ft.

I have an MT because I love jamming my foot to the floorboard like an idiot when I drive my GFs Rav4.

I have had mostly stick cars. My 2006 taco was a 6 speed. I got it with 54k on it, and it was a lease prior to my purchase. I loved it, but found the 1-2 shift to be very widely spaced, and they had a known throw out bearing issue. The synchro in third also started going out around 80k. I drove it easy and kept red line oil in it. I also found that it was very difficult to do low speed offroading, and I was not looking to regear. I never heard a single bad thing about the 5 speed autos. Obviously the third gen trans are both different, but because of the issues I had with my second gen 6 speed I decided to get my 2016 with an auto. It's not as much fun to drive on the road, but it's way more fun off-road. I also don't believe that modern torque converter autos are less reliable than modern sticks. Every auto is not a powerglide from 1973, and every stick is not an M22.

Driving a manual in stop and go city traffic is also kind of annoying. Fortunately, I don't really have to deal with that much. Hate to say it, but if I had to drive in that every day, I would probably opt for an auto.
