That would work for me as my street princess has yet to see a gravel road after 10 months ownership.

Pretty simple to understand, the Sports pile up on the dealer's lot and the Off Roads sell as fast as they come in.

OR tend to appeal to the younger market because they think they are going to go off road all the time with it. The sports, at least in my area are driven more by the mature generation and they tend to drive the trucks until they die. The younger generation buys the truck thinking they can afford it only to find out 2 months later that with insurance and monthly payments they cant.

Just how I see it though.

I don't know if I've ever seen an OR on the streets of Vancouver. Sport, Limited, SR/5 models are pretty much everywhere, but I can't recall seeing a single OR other than the one owned by the salesperson I dealt with when buying the truck.

Each perception is highly biased by the small area an individual surveys. For example, where I live (central Indiana) Tacomas aren't rare but far less common than RAM, GM, Ford full size offerings. The three closest Toyota dealers don't seem to have more than one Tacoma on the lot at any given time, but will have 6-8 Tundras.

My job often involves travel, when I visit a particular shop in Louisiana, it seems like their parking lot is full of Tundras and Tacomas. The young guys buy the Tundra (and almost every one has a different level of Bro Truck treatment) The Tacoma owners there are largely the 40 and up drivers. The trim levels seemed to be about half base models and about half OR models. The single Sport model I saw was a very clean 2nd Gen with the black on black scheme (black paint, black wheels, black bumpers) wide tires and lowered/leveled to look like a NASCAR truck. To be fair, I have no idea what model it started out as, but it had a skewp.

The owner of the above Tacoma is a middle aged woman who worked in assembly. On the third or forth day of my visit I complemented her truck as we entered the building. Her response: "I HATE that thing, but I gave my son my old car and took this when he couldn't make the payments."

It's probably price and option related. You get a lot for your money in a Sport, and also maybe more people lease them? Also, that probably gives the demographics like previously stated. Older people probably buy sports, because they're simpler and ride a little nicer, while a younger person might buy an off-road and not be able to afford the insurance and fuel. I've noticed this too just generally.

Umm, interesting analysises and observations. I'm 55 and have an OR, why because I use it, like it and prefer the look and it's paid for.

I'd have bought a (maybe even new) SR5 or even SR if I could get the e-locker as a stand-alone option. Since that's not possible I got a used OR and ended up with different color shocks sitting on the garage floor. I'm actually starting to watch Craigslist and dig through junk yards looking for things like the non-chrome grill, steel wheels, etc. to put on my TRD OR since I prefer the less flashy look. And I'm solidly in my 40s, so there you go.

Do most people think the OR has a rougher or a better feeling ride? I know "better" is relative, in this case meaning a softer more compliant ride. When I test drove the few Tacomas I could, the Sport and Limited had a firmer feel, the OR was noticeably smoother feeling especially over rough patched blacktop roads and the SR5 was somewhere inbetween.

I see some post that they think the OR is stiffer, is that assumption or from a test drive? Interesting either way.

I would think the Sport would have a rough ride compared to the OR due to less tire sidewall

I would think the younger buyer would pick the Sport due to it looking more sporty, and the OR, appealing to the older buyers that grew up with older style 4x4 less tech trucks. My OR is way to Tecy for me! The SR/SR5 could go either way.

I had read in reviews that the OR has a stiffer harsher ride. To my backside my OR has a much softer ride than either the Sport or SR5 models I test drove. Made the decision even easier.
