Toyota's six speed auto would beat the hell outta their 5 speed stick. 6 gears plus lockup, so 7 available ratios (sorta), smooth as butta. No way some 5 speed crashbox is gonna beat that.

The auto would probably be sluggish. I like having more control over my vehicle. My regular cab is plenty fast and I don't tow much so extra power isn't necessary. I like manuals for easy maintenance. You need more equipment to properly flush an auto tranny. The manual takes less time than an engine oil change. The 4 bangers are very utilitarian, the way trucks should be. Manual tranny, manual locks, manual windows. Manual = reliable. ( less to go wrong )

Not to mention the 4 cylinder is a cast iron block and has a timing chain rather than belt. That's why I went for the 4 banger. Less maintenance. Better economy. And I hate autos.

My 2.7l 4x4 gets 23 with winter fuel+winter/AT tires in the summer i get 26 onb the stock dunlop AT20s. How? 65mph posted speed in Oregon. and keep the tires inflated as high as reasonable , full synthetics(not really sure how much it helps) , pulled 2nd filter and fender elbow for the intake too. MPG is compared to a gps for 65 mph... odometer is accurate.
I just got tired of "too much is not enough" philosophy from selling truck in America, I'm finding this truck loads of fun + i keep more $$ in my pocket.

I hope that is true abut the 2011's because I want an auto 4x4 regular cab. I had a stick shift first gen 4x4 and got real tired of shifting gears in traffic. Call me a old fart ut that is what I want. Don't need power windows, locks, nav system, moon roof just want a plain truck with A/C and auto.
BTW, my reg cab auto is holding up just fine but i don't dog it. :)

Auto's are not necessarily slower, or worse mileage, a lot of the negative responses are assuming this. There are also assumptions being made about longevity. One clutch repair pays for a lot of trans fluid changes. For example the Canadian mileage rating for the 5 speed auto, is 2 mpg higher than the 6 speed.
But, at the end of the day, myself and many other would settle for a slower, slightly less economical truck, because for whatever reason, a lot of us don't want to shift.

i wonder why they didn't put the v6 in the reg cab....seems like with less weight the mpg would be about the same as the 4 banger...dunno

Good question. Some early first gens reg cabs had the V6 and they would walk the dog.

In the auto vs stick debate, has anyone considered the V6's 6 speed vs the Auto5? No advantage in capability, speed, or longevity. If Toyota puts a better auto in the 4 cyl, the auto should match the stick in every respect, except abusive off the line acceleration.
Does anyone know which auto will be paired to the 4 cyl, maybe the 5 speed?

the Colorado has a 2.9L 4 banger. but is chevy, and they're retarded. and yes, i checked. lol. their site takes forever to load. esp on a slow as$ work computer

well...the 6 speed paired with the 1GR is a nice combo, but i have to say the 5 speed auto and the 6 speed stick are kinda different animals. the 5 speed auto is a great truck transmission, but the 6 speed is a good closer ratio gearbox, its really fun to drive esp in the city cause there's a gear for every speed. the 2tr autos now have a pretty solid 4 speed.

i think most of the reg cabs are made auto because like you said, not too many people can drive stick, and alot of the reg cabs, esp the 5 lug, are bought as pure work trucks. my truck has so many ghetto twins its not even funny.
