We have two identical trucks at work. One is 2.4 automatic, one is 2.4 5speed, both are 1st gen trucks. There is a 2.5 mile long 7% grade nearby. The 5speed truck goes up the hill at 65-70 in third gear. The auto goes up at 50-55 with foot on the floor. There may be something wrong with the auto truck, but I know of another one with the same 2.4 auto setup that supposedly performs the same on the same hill. I can't imagine driving a 4x4 with the same auto trans. Are the new trucks that much faster?

I do look twice when I see a red regular cab 4x4 though. Reminds me of my 86 4x4. I miss that truck, despite the fact it was slow enough to be a danger getting on the freeway with it! :turtleride:

What gear was the auto in when it was going up the hill?

You said highway average, not steady, warmed engine cruising. So you were BSing, like I said....

    Ok so your saying:

1: " you said highway average, not steady, warmed engine cruising." Last time I checked most people don't vary from like 40 mph to 80 mph on the highway, mostly keep it at the safe speed, for me that's 60 mph. So highway average....yes

2: " warmed engine cruising" cruising on the highway at 60 mph, yes sir see above statement, and I am pretty sure most people on the highway have "warm" engines soooooo.... I definataly wasn't bull shitting you, sounds like someone is jelous of my 31mpg of "steady warm engine highway cruising"

    wolfgang,
Is that your average highway MPG over an extended period or an instant reading? I only average 20 or so highway on my 2002 2.4l auto.

Have you verified your MPG using your odometer and have you verified your odometer with a GPS or mile markers? The smaller tires might be be giving you a false odometer reading.
I could put smaller diameter tires on my Taco and get a false MPG.

I had the 2.7 in my 95 Extended cab 4x4 Tacoma. It was a great engine for durability but I wouldn't trade it for my V6 auto in my 08 Tacoma. I'm getting old and tired of pushing in that clutch.

to my knowledge thats not how the scangauge takes mpg ratings (through the speedo) although i probably wrong. My gps says 60 mph when i do 65mph via the speedo(i travel at 60 via gps). i havent bothered with doing the math using the odometer because i only get 30 mpg on the highway, so if i fillled up the gas tank took count of the miles and odometer readings, then found the mpg it would be much lower due to city driving.

I drive the 5speed truck. The guy that has the auto says he is pretty sure it's kicking down into second gear. I have not personally driven the automatic truck.

    I'm guilty as charged.

All the info that I have been able to find regarding the OP topic is that the 2011 will not have an auto in the second gen 4x4 2.7 regular cab Taco. Hope I am wrong.

Well, that's 0 - 5 mpg worse than you claimed, HMMM. Well, the average cannot be higher than, um, the average.......

How do you think the scangauge works then? It is just a fancy calculator, that's all.
If your speedo is off by almost 10%, how much do you suppose your mileage estimate is off? The Scangauge measures wheelspeed, vs the amount of fuel consumed. so your scangauge is off by a minimum of 6 - 8%, probably more. As well, the scangauge also needs to be calibrated for fuel consumption, based on fill ups.
So there is no way you are getting 30 mpg average on the highway, which is why I replied as I originally did.
