Many people don't know, but that Ti knob actually has a weiner. The shift boot acts as a kilt to cover it up.

    When you see it ...

PS the Aus mines are no joke. The roads that the mining companies own are also no joke. Haha

While I made a fuss to the crowds about the “difficulty”, you’re definitely right. Much less “wiggle” room when it comes to titanium in terms of speeds, feeds, and tooling. Once you figure it out though (thru $$$ and time) Ti can be mastered like anything else and made easy. Although tapping either titanium or stainless is never a great day until it’s over.

Yep, I'll use a high hook tap for Ti emergencies (to save a part) ... but IMO threadmilling is always the way to go for Ti and SS. Takes longer, but it is relatively pain free and the solid carbide cutters I use seemingly last forever. I can't remember the last time I power tapped relatively soft stainless, my OCD always makes me do it by hand. I generally tap anything under 3/8"/10mm. Could use a form tap and feel confident (even with the dreaded 6-32), but I am not in the production game ... don't need it.

AEV should build a set of Skid Plates for Tacomas out of the Boron Steel.

Also Vascomax is worth a google for those interested. Up to 350ksi ultimate steel alloy. Never seen plates of it though, doesn’t mean they don’t exist.

For shits and grins I compared out different metals during lunch break.

For this analysis, assumed metals only, various thicknesses. To make analysis easy I assumed a 24"x24" flat plate, simply supported on two opposite edges, and line load down the center of the plate. This does NOT correlate to an actual skid plate, just makes this analysis simple to help compare.

There are NO reinforcements analyzed, they have HUGE impact on the analysis in real life if installed. Primarily yield conditions are assumed, where bending deformations will be at least partly permanent, even if they do not have any negative impacts. Generally A basis (99% of the population should equal or exceed the value with 95% confidence) allowable are used per MMPDS-01 or MIL-HDBK-5J.

Note, I have not double checked anything here, so I do not guarantee error free. Again this is comparative only and does not account for stiffeners, gouge resistance, etc.
Also, I probably should have put 5052-H32 in here too, as I think that is the most common alum skid, 6061 is close but a little stronger.

All plots are per weight of the 24"x24", because I am emphasizing performance per pound...

    image017.gif image018.png image019.png image020.png image021.png

(Didnt do steel or titanium at 0.5", to keep the plot axis reasonable)

BTW, a flat plate in bending is like the most inefficient structural design in the history of mankind...

Stronger than all but exotic steels, half the weight (or twice the thickness), more springy-sproingy. However it has a lot lower charpy impact strength than steel which you aren't showing.

Maybe because they still mad at the US for tricking them into selling us titanium to build the blackbirds during the Cold War, and then spying on them with it
