Right. That probably would have been a bad idea. :)

I want a skid built from nano bots. It's probably very expensive but I saw it in a movie this past year. Cant remember the name of the movie, but halt the people get wiped out at the end of the movie.

What about meteorite skids? They make 1911’s out of them.

I have really been wondering if low cost disposable ABS skids would be a better value.

Some people that rock crawl will plate their skids with delrin to help slide over rocks. But a sheet of delrin is also pretty expensive.

What about that UHD coating they put onto the hulls of aluminum jet boats? It's harder than steel, stronger than Kevlar and super slick to allow the boat to slide over rocks.

I think you mean UHMW? Ultra high molecular weight. Same thing as plastic cutting boards.
Would still need a steel backing as they are pretty flexible.

    Yeah that's the stuff!

On top of a lighter gauge steel or aluminum slid with a bracing system on the back. That would be a good light weight option.

I’m curious to see how skid plates fail in the wild anyways. Destructive testing is always more fun than nondestructive. Someone should make the “show me your abused armor” thread.

They don't really fail, I have a set of Relentless aluminum skids and they are battered but they are still there with no broken welds or holes in them. You would have to do some stupid shit to have a set of well-designed skids fail catastrophically.

This is jackass and today we are trying to break the aluminum skid!

Well, bent it a lot and slided on the rocks, but it’s fucking durable and I sold it to another member!

Round 2 with a new skid is awaiting soon, will put it to the test across my Southwest trip this month lol

    Added a few touches.

Aluminumn is hard to bend back but steel can be beat back into place. Only ones to fail would be factory because they are so thin they essentially tear
