Blasphemy - I know, I know.! Hear me out.

Surely some of you have at least considered getting a Wrangler Unlimited (4-door version) at some point in time. So I'm at that point in time now. Historically, I have been a Jeep guy. I love my Taco, but MAN am I getting the itch to take the top and doors off!

What keeps you guys away from Jeeps and into your Taco?

NOT looking for a flame-fest - talking to you, trolls and fanboys. Would love some honest feedback about this - ideally from previous Jeep owners.

I'm in a glass case of emotion!

Reliability and comfort. Compared to any of the jeep wranglers I have been in, my tacoma has been a dream. Doors and Top dont need to come off for the ride to be good.
In the sense of off road ability. If I wanted something vastly better then what i have right now I would be making a custom rig using aftermarket setups and a tubular cage and the cost would be half of what a Wrangler Rubicon would cost you in depreciation once it left the lot. I will admit that in stock form that the wrangler rubicon is a very well setup unit that is loved around the world for its short wheelbase and tight turning radius. Toyota's are known for reliability, offroad ability, and they are trucks. Not even the same catagory.

I guess the real question is what dont you like about both vehicles for what type of driving you do. Pick the one that suites your needs and go with it. Jeep snow.jpg tacoma myra canyon.jpg

I didnt like my Wrangler as a DD (2.5" suspension lift with 34"duratracs). Road trips made me consider renting a car. I did like it very much for just about everything else. I will own another one at some point and it will be for fun.

I had strongly considered it before getting my current taco, but the towing limitations quickly changed my mind into another tacoma.

I had entertained getting one instead for the roof and door reason alone. I don't do a lot of off road stuff, other than drag a tent to go camping. I do however like to go for road trips and explore. I couldn't imagine doing that in a Jeep. It was loud, not that comfortable (to me), and got worse mileage. The Taco, however, has (so far) proven to be awesome for longish rides to nowhere. Also, in terms of reliability, I don't think you can beat the Taco.

I have never owned own but I have had many coworkers and family members that have. Mostly of them have had electrical problems...multiple batteries in a year from different manufactures, flicking lights in dash and radio, and one buddy is in the process of going through the Lemon law (3 transmissions under 50,000 miles all done by Jeep). And most have had to go back to Jeep for some reason or the other. They look cool but I would never get one simply because of reliability...give me spongy brakes and weak leaf springs any day of the week!

This, we got our JKU back in May of this year put 3 inch lift with 35's and it was rough. I would rather take my taco on long trips instead of jeep because of comfort. Yeah it was fun took off top couple of times wife and kids enjoyed it but still rode like crap. So we just traded it in and got a suv, plus if we want to go to beach or Offroad I have my truck to do that.

So do you roadtrip with your Taco now? Happier with that than with the Jeep? I roadtrip a lot, so that's a big thing for me.

Agreed - reliability there is no question. The new Wranglers (2007+) have been pretty problem-prone; the old TJs (1997-2006) with the 4.0L I6s were better, but I still don't think they'd hold a candle to the Taco's reliability reputation.

Eek - those are some bad experiences! I have owned quite a few Jeeps, and I can't say I have ever had THAT bad of experiences, but agreed that the reliability of a Taco is hard to beat!

My wife and I bought a '15 rubicon unlimited last year. Wife and kids love it with no top and no doors. I like it too, lots of fun. Off-road, it's very clunky and uncomfortable. Looks badass. image.jpg

Maybe that's what I need to do - convince my wife to get one for her, and then I can still keep my Taco, hmmm...

She has a TDI Jetta Sportwagen that she's pretty fond of, though! We'll see...

From what I have heard from friends who have owned them - if you have good mechanical skills, get a Jeep because you'll be working on it a lot.

I do road trips with the taco. Its comfortable and reliable. But I wish I had kept my 2003 taco and had the jeep for playing. There is something about the jeep with the top and doors off that makes up for its shortcomings

I don't off road and would hate a Wrangler. They are loud (inside), shitty mpgs, no bed, expensive, and serve no purpose I'd want my vehicles to serve. I also do not want a vehicle I could easily lose limbs or my life in because it's all open.

I like trucks. The Wrangler is not a truck.

I just bought my husband a used Grand Cherokee. Love that. I think the Wranglers do have reliability issues because I've heard some stories like Oey mentions. But all vehicles have some stories.

So, further background, I have owned 32 Jeeps. When I was in the Corps, I'd buy old crappy ones, tool around on them, and re-sell them pretty often. So I'm not scared of working on them; however, as I now have kiddos and such, I certainly have to take reliability into account now and can't roll around in $500 Jeeps anymore.

2015 Wrangler vs 2015 Tacoma, the Wrangler is actually rated at better MPGs for a V6 (17/21 vs 16/21).
