Fatality rates for drivers begin to climb after age 65, according to a recent study by Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, based on data from 1999-2004. From ages 75 to 84, the rate of about three deaths per 100 million miles driven is equal to the death rate of teenage drivers. For drivers 85 and older, the fatality rate skyrockets to nearly four times higher than that for teens.

The numbers are particularly daunting at a time when the U.S. Census Bureau projects there will be 9.6 million people 85 and older by 2030, up 73% from today. Road safety analysts predict that by 2030, when all baby boomers are at least 65, they will be responsible for 25% of all fatal crashes. In 2005, 11% of fatal crashes involved drivers that old.

Sorry... gotta show the opposing viewpoint. This is why young people shouldn't drive-

Got my nastiest scare yet on Saturday, riding my Victory Vision down I15 from Vegas to California. I'm tooling along with traffic between 75 and 80mph, and decide to take the right lane. I check the mirror, AND look over my shoulder, then commit to the lane change. Just as I cross the lane marker a black tuner Acura is zooming by in that lane at 95+. It took everything I had to haul my bike back into the center lane, and ten minutes to work the cramp from my right bicep. The punk SOB was long gone- moving so fast and changing all three lanes at once, so I never had a shot at getting his plate #. If only I'd been on my avatar bike (with guns mounted), I would have opened his trunk for him.
I'm still spooked about it- he came out of nowhere, and I was no more than 6" off his mirror when he went by.

Probably judging by the way the vehicle was modded no person under 30 would have been driving it.

I say manditory retest every 5 years as was previously states. You hit 65, every 2 years till you die.

Second, Old people fatalities for crashes is higher cause they don't react well to the laws physics.

Falling off the shitter can be a life or death thing for a 75 year old.

They should have to retake the driving test. I've had to many close calls with the elderly. A lot of them seem to be in parking lots.

Don't go picking on us old farts, we just might run you over and blame it on our meds... just joking.
My dad is 74 and drives his Taco from Helena Mt to the Seattle area three or four times a year, no accidents.
The older I get the more my thinking changes from how I thought about things when I was younger.
But my thinking hasn't changed about the state restricting my rights anymore than they already have.
    BTW... I'm 53.

I feel your pain. I would be super ticked as well. My old taco got rear ended when it was parked on the side of a residential street about a month after I bought it. Irritating as hell.

You need to take a closer look at that graph.

A woman has to be 70+ years old before ANY male of ANY age is less likely to have a fatal accident.

That doesn't condemn the old my friend, it condemns men.

I was at the dmv the other day getting a bike registered & this old lady (80ish) was renewing her license. She was about 4'6" tall, walking with a walker, couldn't hear, & had glasses as thick as coke bottles. She was being helped by a relative & they just took her picture without giving an eye exam & gave her a new license. This woman was struggling to move & they just gave her a license to drive? I hope I'm never on the same street as her when she's behind the wheel.

    You won't be.

You'll be at work when she goes to the doctor and the grocery store. You won't see her on the expressway. You probably won't see her at all because she only drives about 4,000 miles a year.

On the other hand, she says you scared hell out of her last week when you came around that blind corner 20 mph over the speed limit. :p
