Well technically they merged with citroen/puegot so French too but its not like Chrysler was a bastion of reliability prior to all of this.

I’m seriously thinking about a 4dr wrangler with fox shocks and 33s. Seems like a much better setup for offroading.

Kid I knew who was in med-school (changes people in to quite pretentious folks, man) kept talking trash that his Jeep Renegade was American and my Toyota wasn’t haha. Didn’t say a word that he was driving a Fiat 500

Why not? Pretentious folks always deserve to be taken down a notch. Especially when they're bragging about a Jeep Renegade of all things haha

Tacoma is winning in sales by a huge margin because it is the best all-around midsize truck.

    • Looks the best
    • Best reliability
    • Best resale
    • Best aftermarket support by a huge margin

If you're keeping your truck for >50k miles, it shits on the Colorado and the Ranger. Money is always a factor.

Offroading in my eyes is a competition between Toyotas and Jeeps for first place. Toyota wins reliability but Jeep wins capability. I don't have money to piss away so the Tacoma won easily when I was shopping a year ago.

Just make sure you have a friend with a Toyota to bring you back when that Jeep inevitably breaks down. ;)

These guys take Tacoma’s “Extreme off roading”. They did better than a jeep on an obstacle. I wheel with Jeep’s all the time (dad and his friends have built rubi’s). My only limitations are that I haven’t modded my truck to the level of the Hardline and Tacoma beast guys in this video.

Not saying tacos IFS, front air lockers, departure and approach angle are as good as a Jeep but they will get you through almost everything a jeep will do with the right mods.

Only way the Chev or Ford would be better than the Taco, is to get the Diesel option. Other than that, they're still Taco wannabees who keep trying to knock Toyota off the top spot, but never do.

Heck, even the Jeep pickup doesn't come close to sales of the Taco.

I love how the "Jeep Groupies" come out of the closet to defend what is easily one of the least reliable vehicles out there. Best part: right under their avatar or in their signature block is the description of the TACOMA they drive... LMAO.

Lots of folks asked "...what is extreme off-roading?" Different to everyone I suppose. In your research, did you notice how unpopular Jeeps are around the rest of the world? It's because shops with Youtube/FB/Instagram pages aren't around every corner. When your truck/rig/whatever inevitably breaks - you gotta be able to fix it in the bush. So the best choice s the one that breaks down the least. Full disclosure: After experience with 3 Jeeps - I hate them. The break-down time associated with driving time is just not worth the headache. Beasts off-road. Goats. They WILL take you anywhere - I dare anyone to prove me wrong. The problem is - they have less of a chance of getting you back. If you're gonna get a jurassic-kitted Jeep, put that thing on a trailer and tow it with a Toyota to/ from your off-roading. It's about getting there, but reliability, that nasty R-word will get you back. Ford/ Chevy...meh...that reliability thing - not as bad as Jeep, but nowhere near Toyota. Any of the three (Toyo/Ford Chevy) when properly equipped, will get you into the extreme, but in my not-so-humble opinion, the Toyo will do it longer, with fewer problems. I'm sure the OP read all these posts, here's what I picked up in summary:

    • However, when going off-road it's almost exclusively Jeeps (for obvious reasons) and Tacomas that you see. So I figured there must be a reason for this... (Yeah, at least here in the states, elsewhere, it's Toyota and Land Rover)
    • There is a reason why those crazy terrorist groups are driving around the desert with machine guns mounted to Tacoma/Hilux models for their activities...
    • The Colorado is nice. On the other hand consumer reports says it’s the least reliable vehicle you can buy.
    • There’s a reason people going to the middle of nowhere bring a Toyota and it’s not it’s off road chops, it’s the probability of having an issue being lower (not zero), that’s all. If you want to have the least repair bills, get a Toyota.
    • Arctic Trucks (Why Toyota? Not too many shops in Antarctica/ Greenland/ North Pole above 80N or below 80S to fix things - there’s that “R” word again).
    • Just watched a Gladiator do a bunch of trails in Moab and they seemed to do just fine.Sure I saw a Jeep on the side of the road on fire but a lot of people drive them.
    • I can't find a reason NOT to buy the Toyota. The reliability, resale value & versatility just can't be beat IMO......
    • Toyota Tacoma: Reputation for durability, excellent articulation
    • That said, offroading is the only thing that my jeep did better than either of my trucks. It was loud, unreliable, uncomfortable, and got 9 miles to the gallon with 35's. The Tacoma is better in every other aspect.

Instagram and social media are a disease. Yea, jeeps and tacos dominate social media but in real life you see a plethora of vehicles.

I've had 2 Tacoma's (16 & 21) and a 13 JK...I've built the JK for rocks with Motobilt armor, Metalcloak suspension, JE Reel driveline, Yukon gears & lockers. Ran the Rubicon this year and saw plenty of Toyotas (old), Power Wagons, Lexus, 4 runners, Samurai's, etc. All vehicles can 'extreme off-road' if you've got the money to put into it - for my personal taste, the maneuverability, solid front axle, visibility, approach & departure angles all make my JK my weekend wheeling vehicle. The Tacoma is comfortable on the highway, good enough payload for camping, etc. I have to say, my 3.6L Pentastar on 35's / 4.56's still drives better (performance) than the 3.5L Tacoma. Not a hater - love both vehicles, but the JK is significantly more fun to drive. Quick math to get my Tacoma upgraded to do these types of trails is about $20K...then I still don't have the visibility or maneuverability. But I do like my 21 ORP. For the FIAT thing...all JK/JL's are made in Ohio, by Americans with pride in their work. My Toyota was made in Mexico....jussayin.
