Why people complaint about 2.7 power ???

Hi, I just buy a 2001 Tacoma xCab SR5 4x4 manual with the 3rz about 1 month ago . Since then I have put 3 inch lift and 33/12.5/15 tire on it. Before I have do the modification I have read everywhere that the 2.7 is barely ok on 33 for highway use etc…
    I dont understand that !

I can cruise at 75-80 mph all day long with ease and keep up with traffic really good. Really, I don’t understand why people complaint. I have even push it to 105 mph to test it and no problem.

My previous 4x4 was a TJ with the 4.0 and the little 3RZ do a lot better. One of my kid have a 4Runner with the 3.4 auto on 33 and I think I prefer the peppy 4 cylinder over the smooth V6. I average 18 mpg and is 4Runner do 15 mpg. It’s winter here.

    Where do you live?

Put 1000 pounds in the bed tow another 1500 in rolling hills stop and go traffic in the mountains.I get around 10 to 12 mpg .(3.4 /5 speed

The 2.7 just was a tad under powered when loaded and got worse fuel mileage for what I needed a Truck for

What is important is it works for you for your use of the truck.

I have to say my 2.7 3rz is my favorite truck out of all my Toyota’s. Got a 3.4 and it’s nice but you just cannot beat the fuel economy of the 2.7! I’ve hauled all types of stuff with it and have not been disappointed yet.

I love my 2.7, but we live in a world where a 500hp half ton truck and a 1000lb-ft diesel 3/4 ton truck seems normal. I just don’t care much about all that.

Really depends on your setup. I have big tires, a camper shell and soon, I'll add a custom bumper and winch, maybe a tire carrier + rear bumper too. I drive a lot of steep mountain roads. For me, the 3.4 is optimal. Glad you love your 2.7 Taco though!

U run my 2.7 70-75mph and with 30x9.5 tires I run 2400 rpms. I just wish it had some more torque for those steep grades

if you have a manual, try the LCE heavy-weight high torque flywheel. It’s pricey, but really helps with hill speed

I live in Quebec, Canada, i tow my 2 side by side (over 3000 lbs) with it no trouble. Just need to rev it more and don’t use de 5th.
For me its funny to see that people need 400hp in a pickup… years before, a F150 have 150 hp and tow everything

true, but that 150hp was in a v8 with considerably more torque than the 2.7. I owned a 1986 GMC Jimmy with a 305c.i. v8 that put out 160HP and 235lb.ft. torque. This thing weighed like 4400lbs itself and honestly couldn't tow much. My 3.4 has 190hp and 220lb.ft in a 204c.i. v6.

I've though about that as I think the rear main is leaking and I may have to get in there anyways...

But at 330k miles not sure how far I wanna go.

I Duno, I miss my extended cab 3rz. Thing had plenty of power and got amazing gas mileage. I hauled a bunch of motorcycles in it and it never lost any pep. I guess if your hauling a boat trailer you might notice a noticeable difference but I honestly never did.

Sounds to me like you live somewhere where a freeway overpass is the biggest "hill" you have around.

But something to keep in mind is that those 400hp+ trucks are rated to tow 3x as much as your little 4cyl, and do it easier than your truck tows 3k. There's something to be said for not having to shift to first going up hills...

No one needs 400hp to tow 3000 pounds. A VW Bug can tow just about anything with low enough gearing. A Tundra towed the Space Shuttle (almost 20x it's rated capacity), but very slowly and over a very short distance.

3RZ is fine on flat roads but if you have a lot of hills on your commute then it just doesn't cut the mustard. Add on modding with bumpers and bigger tires and unless you regear it's even worse. You can downshift to help but the 3.4 can do it with out down shifting.

My 2.7 was fantastic outside of getting up to speed on short on ramps where the speed limit was 65/70 (actual speed of drivers 75/80). Had to drive straight onto the shoulder numerous times so I wouldn’t cause an accident, and I would have the pedal to the floor. Loved it outside of that.:thumbsup:EFBA4A8F-1733-4B84-A469-7101293924A3.jpg

A truck thé size of a Tacoma is not made to tow more so why complaint… a guy that buy a Tacoma don’t have the same need that a guy with a F550

    The truck weight 1600kg….

here in Quebec we have a lot of hill, not flat like the prairies…

Anyway, for the size of the Tacoma I don’t know why people complaint.

It’s a hell of a good truck, bulletproof too, complaints are like assholes… doesn’t mean people can’t bitch though.

Like so many other things in life, what's good for one person isn't good for every person. Whether or not the 2.7 has enough power depends on how you use it, and what your expectations for the truck are. If it meets your needs, then it has enough power for you - at that point, that should be what matters. Other folks may use their trucks for other uses where the 2.7 doesn't have enough 'umph' - that doesn't make them right and you wrong, or vis versa.

Did you re-gear when you got the 33's, or are you still running stock gears? Because that will do a LOT to affect how the truck tows.

But who said anything about a truck with an 18,000 tow capacity. Don't be ridiculous. The F550 isn't even on the same planet as a Tundra, let alone a Tacoma.

I personally like being able to maintain the speed limit on hills, and not get passed by 80,000 pound tanker trucks. Which is what happened in my v6 towing less weight than you claim to carry "with no issues" in your 4cyl with 33's.
