That's why you do a compression test before you buy. Just need a socket for a spark plug and a tester. Only takes 5 minutes.

Believe I've done a pretty good job of maintaining it over the 26 years I've owned it since new. Otherwise I would not have gotten 415,000 trouble-free miles out of it and it definitely wouldn't be in the excellent condition it is now. ;)

It’s very clean, and I didn’t intend that as an insult. But valve adjustment is a regular maintenance item that you seem to be neglecting

Is there a consensus on a timeframe mileage-wise to perform the valve adjustment?

Yep, all dem big strong trucks. About 1988 when I had my 86 22R 4x4 I was going to the Keys from from Canaveral with my 20ft SeaCraft fully loaded with gas, dive gear etc. (3500lbs +) and called my older brother to borrow his V8 Chevy. Nadda, said it wasn't running good and he didn't trust it for the trip, called a local friend...same story his V8 had issues and wasn't up to the task. OK, Toy truck lets go! Got there fine and dandy but learned that on guy pulling a 22ft boat with his Ford F250 blew his engine in Miami. His buddy following took over hauling the boat with his BIG NEW FORD and by the time he got to Marathon our destination his lug bolt studs were coming loose and truck vibrating like hell ready to crash. Both Fords in the shop outta town.
Hahaha my toy truck (the in my avatar) made it there and back home w/o a HITCH. Did it a second time a couple years later too. Had to draft semi's to get over 65 but that was one tough little truck. Dumb azz sold it when I got my 05.
My 2022 has the V6 but would have gladly gone with the 4 banger but none were available at the time. I've yet to tow anything with it.

It’s not quick and I’d hate to drive on long grades at altitude but it’s doing the job of keeping my wallet healthy. Gets 27mpg on road trips and ~24 the rest of the time.

Every 340k miles in my case. It was one exhaust valve two shim numbers off (0.08mm off the perfect spec). After the change it's good for the next 340k miles.

Yeah when I checked mine (5VZ-FE), they need no adjustments at all. Still, it was good to know this for peace of mind.

That is lucky, had I used the same schedule I'd be driving around with a burnt valve for another 140k miles.

50k to check, adjust if necessary. It really depends on the motor - some clearly don't need it as bad.

I wonder if it depends on how it's driven/maintained. Maybe with a lot of highway miles with minimal heat cycling they can last a lot longer, but with lots of short trips and/or poor maintenance they'll burn out faster.

Even though the engine runs great, I will check mine every 500,000, only 85,000 more to go.

Maybe 3 hours of labor? @Potomus Pete checking them is fault easy with a buddy and a feeler gauge, but adjusting them can be tricky. There should be threads on here that describe the process. Also check out Timmy the Toolmans how to video.

I am pretty good with anything mechanical, but the feeler gauges get me. It's the math that I have never been good at. Nobody wants to give a mechanic any money if they are a true car guy.

I just did my valves in my 345k 3rz and it appeared to be the first time the valve cover had ever been off. I had quite a few of them out of spec. A couple intake valves were to tight to get a feeler gauge under and one exhaust was so loose that even after putting in the thickest shim Toyota sells it is still a couple thou out. I was luckily able to rearrange the factory shims to get most back into spec but had to order about 6 shims. That was probably the worst part, waiting for shims. Ok, second worst, getting the very rear shims out is a mother “@&$;:. It’s not a bad job overall, having a second vehicle is helpful so you don’t have to put it back together to drive while waiting on shims. It made a huge improvement on engine noise and seems to run much smoother
