Why shouldn't I trade my 2016 Rubicon for a TRD?

OP, your situation sounds more like an issue with the dealer than with the Jeep. Go to another dealer to have your work done.

If you still want a Tacoma, I would wait for the the next year to see if they address some of the first year issues.

    Go with a trd pro 4Runner ?
Will cost you a little more out of pocket now but will hold its value way better than a jeep will.
I had a 2010 rubicon it was fun but underpowered just like my '16 Tacoma .
Hopefully my 4Runner shows up by Friday image.jpg

With all due respect, Jeeps suck and at the end of the day they are more of a "F'd over rebuild Dodge" than any Ford I've ever driven...

Like so many have said, wait for a 2017 or get a 2015 Off-Road or Pro. I love my 14 in Magnetic Gray Metallic, and I've taken it through 35 states in literally every terrain the mainland has to offer.

Be sure to check your JK's value at CarMax, they offered more than top dollar for my 2015 base JK.
Your going to miss the JK's approach/departure/breakover angles & general offroad ability :)

And keep in mind you can get a base tacoma 4x4 5-spd, utility package for around $24k (excluding state taxes), if you don't want/need the extras included in the OR package; it would free up over $10k for paying off those school loans.

    .
Toyota's trade in value might be less than you think.

And Chris4x4 can probably assist you more, he has a Rubicon too.

Peace of mind is important when you own a vehicle, good luck in whatever you do.

    I wanted an MT.
I'll throw my opinion out there...I have a 2014 DCSB Sport...Manual Transmission which I absolutely love... That being said, I am having surgery on my wrist in December and I really need to get rid of it and get a auto transmission as I will be unable to shift for a while...

    I test drove a few jeeps, Ram's, Ford's, GMC's, Tundra, and two 2016 Tacoma's...

Here is my opinion on it... I am just not a full sized truck guy... I don't really need one...I love my Tacoma, it is perfect for me... I like the looks of the 2016 Tacoma's, I like the feel of them, but once I drove the 2016 Off Road DCSB Auto, I was sick to my stomach. That truck is a slap in the face to Toyota faithful... I didn't like the way it drove, it was sluggish, constantly searching for the correct gear, and it almost seemed to have a louder interior than my truck has...

I test drove a new Rubicon Unlimited AT at about 43K sticker (out the door for 39 and some change) and I really liked it...I liked how it drove, it was surprisingly quiet, felt stable...steering was a little quick, but I liked it... I do like my truck bed though... So I have a lot to think about in the coming weeks..I may have to look into getting a 2015 Tacoma off road Automatic while my wrist heals...or pick up a cheap Subaru and just keep my truck.

And for what its worth, here in West Virginia the Toyota dealerships are paying top dollar for jeeps... they are a hot item at the moment.

If it were me...I'd keep the jeep for a while, you still have plenty of warranty...maybe take it to another dealership for warranty work... Best of luck.

As a Jeep fanboy, that sucks you've had problems. That being said, if you're gonna get rid of it, do it asap before the new models show up so you can get max trade in.

If I were you, I would trade the Jeep for a 3rd gen Tacoma as fast as I could get to the dealership. A lot of people on here downs the 3rd gens because of all the "problems" they have, but I couldn't be happier with my truck. I love everything about it, the ride is very smooth, the interior is great, and the exterior is just awesome. So glad Toyota finally upgraded the Tacoma because Lord knows it needed it. I wouldn't even consider the 2015 model after owning a new one because of how freaking sweet it is. Now its your decision and a lot of people will probably try and argue with me about the 3rd gens, but they are by far the best mid-size truck on the rode in my opinion. And if you decided to trade, the TRD Sport is the best looking one out of all of them. Hope this helps!

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Taco - it's the best vehicle I've ever owned. Caveat being that auto trucks seem to have a lot more complaints than MT ones seem to. But I don't think there will be many changes with 2017 models considering the lack of updates Tacomas generally see year over year. But that said, you might get a solid deal for a remaining 2016 if cost is important.

Agreed however with the others that the trade in value doesn't pass the smell test. That's just a way to suck you in. If I were in your shoes I would decide based on what that number actually is. If it's close to 37k I'd pull the trigger now. Otherwise I'd wait out for a bit and let the initial depreciation level out. You do have that warranty to fall back on, though I would find another dealer service dept... Good luck whichever way you go.

Better yet, you do know a bunch of people bought 14's and 15's, optioned them out with lifts, wheels, all the goodies, then traded them in for 16's don't ya? Take a look around, I've seen many at dealerships with barely any miles, and a lot of what you would upgrade is already done. I would look at them first.

Regarding an even trade, you may be better off going this route; and we all know that the 4.0L is a Solid engine.

Wow, thank you so much for the honest, no bs replies.

To clear some things up, I know that it is a dealership issue, but its not secret that chrysler is crap. the 4.0 was reliable as anything, but the 3.6, although it is a decent engine, is not as reliable, at least in my eyes, and that is where the problem lies . . . that I dont trust it. That is where the whole issue is. The fact that I am not comfortable taking it a couple hours from my house, let alone a couple thousand miles.

As for the transmission goes, I would absolutely have to have a 6 speed, so sluggish auto wouldn't concern me. I would also not be interested in a 4runner. I can't deny their appeal, but the beauty of my predicament and what is tempting me is that It is possible for me to not pay a dime out of pocket.

Lastly, and this is another question for you guys: as you know, the 2018 model year wrangler is going to be released here in the next couple months, or 2017 or whatever they are calling it, which will undoubtedly make mine less valuable. At the same time, some of you are saying to wait and get a 17 taco because it will have less bugs. Back to what I said earlier about the major appeal to this swap currently would be that I can still get top dollar for my wrangler, where as if I wait, the value only decreases while the value of the taco will go up with the 17 year.

Regardless, I am pleased with our responses, I as expecting some typical fanboi crap but It's nice to get some honest opinions on your experiences.

I was in your situation a few months ago except I traded a 2011 F350. I would go into the dealer, pick out the truck you want. Don't even mention you want to trade your Jeep and haggle them down as far as they'll go on the Tacoma. When they're locked in on the price of the Tacoma then "change" your mind about trading in your Jeep. Be prepared for some epic back peddling and some colossal low balling. If you don't get a deal that's agreeable, walk. No harm no foul.

I went from a rubicon to FJ and now to 16 taco OR 6-MT, almost straight across trade in all instances. I couldn't be happier with the 16 taco. Negotiate taco price first saying cash. Use truecar.com as an excellent tool to calculate value of deal, make sure to enter all the options and match msrp, you want to be in first or second quadrant.

To contrast, the taco is much more comfortable daily/long distance driver, and awesome to have functional truck storage again. Camping out of the rubicon and FJ was always a problem solving game. The rubicon does have an edge off-road over the factory taco given the shorter wheel base and factory lockers. But that can be addressed to a point with aftermarket. Always some sort of trade-off, just depends on the vehicle use. I had a few warranty issues first year with my rubicon as well, and pain in the butt for the service hassle. No bugs or issues with my taco so far, believe silent majority are not having any issues, specially 6-MT tacos.

you're not going to see any significant changes between 16 and 17, other than nameplate and perhaps another color option

I had a 2014 2 door JK. Loved it and had no issues. However, my fantasy that I could transport a 1 and 3 year old on the occasional errand was a poor plan... I did a Craigslist sale and it worked out great. Then purchased a 2016 Toyota Tacoma 4 door off road. I love it minus concerns from hearsay on the transmission. I do miss the jeep but don't regret the switch.

I don't think you'll get an even trade unless you pick modestly optioned Tacoma.
Even then, the negotiating leverage falls with the dealer.
Definitely think it through, you could roll negative equity into it if they push higher trade numbers on MSRP truck.
Most Toyota dealers have many buyers for little inventory.
If you really want out of your Jeep, try selling it Private Party or CARMAX as suggested.
That gives you cash to cover your note than shifts the negotiating leverage back to you.
Either way, as you already know, the biggest hit on depreciation is driving it off the lot.
Toyota's hold their value way better in this regard but still you want to make sure it is the truck you want & its not an emotional decision.
    Good luck

What happens if you make the trade and then have issues with your Toyota dealership? Are you going to trade for something else at that point?

image.jpg Holy crap man I'm literally doing the same trade! Mines a 15 JKUR 6speed and I freaking hate that manual. I've driven manuals for the last 10 years exclusively and never ever thought I'd want an auto. Test drove a 16 double cab off-road auto and I'm sold! My quicksand should be here either this weekend or Tuesday. So glad I saw this post. Been a Jeep guy for years and thought I was high even considering this move. Glad I'm not the only one dissatisfied with my new Jeep purchase. Get the 16 brother, join me on the dark side!
