also best way to test it, just hit the button and back out of your driveway. you will know very quickly as you start to turn it will chirp and bind

but be warned! locker motors that sit for a while and dont get used can gunk up and not work right. and as long as it has probably been sitting it would not surprise me.

symptoms are taking a while to engage, or disengage, or not doing so all the way, or just flat out not working.

if you hit the button and turn and its not locked try just driving forward (SLOWLY) for a ways, or try snaking back and forth. if you turn the radio off and stick your head out the window you can hear it click on and off. the best way i have found to unlock it is to (while stopped) hit the button, then turn the wheel sharply and give it a quick blip of gas in reverse. unlocks it quickly every time. On that note, i never hit that button when im moving. always stopped, hit the button, then move again.

To test the locker? Put it in 4lo (if it doesn't have any mods) push the locker button, the ABS light on your dash with come on, and your rr locker light will come on and stay on or blink. If it blinks then yours "trying" to engage. I have heard it's "waiting" for your tires to "slip" before locking. However when I lock mine it comes on and stays on regardless of slippage. I can hear and feel it engage in the rearended. And u will notice a difference in traction obviously lol

The warning sticker on the door: Locker is for getting unstuck (or if you know you are about to enter potential stuck, to prevent). It should not be left on when on dry pavement and turning (the whole purpose of an open differential is to allow the two tires to rotate at different speeds as needed to turn).

The 5 mph speed limit is to keep you from driving into a tree or off a cliff, BECAUSE steering is difficult when locked and delayed if going too fast. If you are on a beach or wide open mud field, then you are safe at higher speed.

Use the locker wisely and it will serve you well... said a Jedi Knight once. Use it foolishly, and it may be the last thing you do in that Tacoma!

I'm going to ask another simple and slightly related question. I have a 2001 3.4l 4x4 TRD. I'm browsing through used parts and (especially on ebay) they list 4x4 w/o ABS w/o auto-disconnecting differential (ADD). I don't have ABS, and I thought I had ADD but now I'm not sure since it pops up so often on used sites for 2001 parts. I don't have manual lockers, so does that mean I definitely have ADD? Just need to check before I buy a new right side spindle.

    thanks

ADD is for the front. You are correct that if you do not have ADD then you have manual hubs. But since you are an 01 you do not have manual hubs, there for you have ADD.

the ADD is on the front diff, i believe on the pass side axle tube side. i dont see how it would even effect the spindle purchase. but either way, yes you have ADD
