No, the only thing it does is allow the locker to engage in 2WD, but the pre-runners come that way.

If you have a locker and have not used it... then you are not using your Tacoma to its full potential!

I'm sorry Rouge, I wasn't aware that information sharing and truck issues had expiration dates.... In that case, over half of this entire site is pointless! Time to start all over with a "New" one so we can start benefiting from the shared information once again!

When I tried mine (in the slippery, freshly fallen snowy -flat- road) it didn't do anything. It has full differential oil but it did, however, start smelling like I was burning it up or something :(
    I think mine is broken....

?? is the light flashing or on solid? The oil doesn't make it work, an electric motor moves a part inside the diff, to lock both sides together.

Did it smell like burning oil? Or electrical burn? only thing I could think of is the solenoid went bad. When was the last time you think it might have been used? it might be all gunked up.

I don't know when it was last used, i got the truck used in 2011 & have never used the RDL. I can't recall the specific smell, all I know is it was definately caused by pushing the button (which flashed at 1st & then stayed solid), so I quickly turned it off.
The other day it snowed again, so I took a chance & tried it again, going up a slight incline. I rolled down my window & heard it make an electrical engaging sound when I pushed the button (no noticeable smell this time but the wind was really blowing, so ??) But I didn't feel any difference in my 2-5 mph driving. Was I supposed to? Would I only feel it if I was going up a really challenging hill?

most of the time you won't feel it going straight. I have 4x4 and have never needed off roading yet but I don't do difficult stuff. I use mine in 2wd (grey wire mod for us 4x4 drivers) to do snow doughnuts better. Don't try turning with it on dry pavement it can damage axle. If the light stays solid it probably engaged. one way to tell is when you turn on loose traction stuff it will make rear end swing out more. You can also engage it and turn just a little bit CAREFULLY on dry pavement at VERY slow speed you will feel a difference in it. then disengage... PS you can drive faster then 5mph that is just a disclaimer for legal reasons. But only engage at speeds under 5 and wait for solid light and disengage at slow speeds.
