I think it is largely a generational or age thing as much as anything else. it is the style popular nowadays on trucks. That is a good thing for people like me, the opposite. Lots of great deals on the buy/sell sites for original chrome parts.

A lot of buyers my age are stuck in the mindset of the classic muscle cars from the 60's/70s. That mindset of keeping it original and showroom condition which sometimes reaps major profits 50 years later. This may or may not (probably not) apply to a 2nd Gen Tacoma, who knows, and who will still have one in mint condition 50 years from now. But just saying there are different mindsets out there when it comes to tastes or intended usage for the items they purchase.

I chose black because it's easy to touch up with spray paint after fucking them up wheeling

Isn't it just personal taste? not generational (my old man had a blacked out dodge truck) just like the look. it's easy to touch up and looks great clean. simple as that.

Is there really a lot of options out there. The majority of styles will be in black or chrome.

    +1.

In the import tuner car world everyone is moving over to bronze wheels. I'm starting to see this trend on the truck side of the hobby too. Method wheels just release a bunch of their most wheel designs in bronze within the last few months. I can see 2017 being the year of bronze take over.

Yes it is personal taste, definitely. My point is that personal tastes are often groomed by what decades you acquired your tastes in vehicles. What was considered "cool" and popular at that time might have had a big influence, but in many cases not so much. Actually I always tended to lean against the popular flow.

Reading above, I sense the beginnings of the next generation of old fart's rebellion against bronze colors. Back in the 60/70s, "bronze" (or black) was a cheap paint over steel just to save the manufacturer the cost using of nice looking wheel covers.

The really premium priced wheels were high quality chrome without covers.

So today, to someone from that era, black or bronze sometimes looks like a plain steel wheel with the hubcap missing (depends on the look and design of the wheel, though). Just depends on the paradigm one adopted at an early age.

to be honest, I'm really tired of the black wheel look

but like others have said, it's a matter of personal choice

my opinion: ...... a lot of black wheels look exactly the same, 10 feet away
