Hi guys, forgive me but I have to ask.

Why are a lot of people on here trading their 16 or 17 for a 19 or a 20? I'm just really curious for the reasoning behind it.

I see people trade in for the exact truck, maybe a different color but the options are the same the only thing different is the model year. I just find it odd.

The only logical reasoning to me would be trading an auto for a manual or vice versa.

If Toyota discontinues the 6MT with the Gen 4 I'll probably trade in my '19 for whatever the last year Gen 3 is just to go back to 0 miles.

'16s and '17s had some well-documented refinement issues that were ironed out in later years. '18 and '19 added TSS, which are conveniences a lot of people want (even if saying so is a bad thing on TW some of the time). '20 has power seats, LEDs standard on the upper trims as well. Colors change year to year too, and if you're going to live with a vehicle for a while, might as well get what you want.

Love my ‘17 (off road 4x4 DCSB auto), NO ISSUES with this truck whatsoever, but find myself wanting to upgrade to a 19/20 Pro.

only reason I haven’t done it is because this is just supposed to be a decent daily driver and not a toy, but it gets harder and harder to obey.

It's a nuclear arms race in terms of features and the only thing getting blown up is people's finances. They say sill stuff like you only live once. The interest rate is so low. The resell is so great.

I've adjusted my seat once and Carplay, pano-cam pfft not interested.

Just wait till a front locker and rear discs come out, rinse repeat

I wanted a 2020,but just couldn't justify the price increase for the packages I wanted..that and my favorite color,Cav Blue, was discontinued. So a 19 it was. Granted,I came from a 2013 Frontier,so I can't really vouch for others who came from a 16 Taco lol in all honesty, the upgrades with the 2020's were tempting, but I figured I really wouldn't use them enough to make me jump the fence

It's disappointing that Cav blue is NLA. They really should have canned MGM it's had a good run

My 2004 expedition shit the bed this summer. I have been saving for a Tacoma for a while before that happened. Really wanted to wait for a 2020, but push came to shove and I pulled the trigger on a 2019. Ended up with an OR DCSB. Was initially looking for a SR5. I love the truck, but have entertained the idea of a 2020, exactly the same, but the power seats and android auto sound way cool. The Entune kinda sucks tbh and is really only useful for me for bluetooth audio. The navigation never gets me to where I wanna go, the voice recognition isn't good, can't put an address in while driving (safety thing, understandable). Realistically I'm gonna drive this 2019 for at least 10 years though.

I wouldn't be so sure that's accurate. Many people assume if they can afford monthly payments, they're fine upgrading.

There's a big difference between looking like you have money and actually having money.

Carplay, LED headlights and power driver seat are the only new things the 2020 has over my 2018... my seat never moves, I put in HID and have a android headunit. Problems solved without buying a new truck.

The driveline is the same through all the years, the body is the same, there are no changes other than superficial ones that people cant live without (like power seats for some crazy reason)

What HID and android unit did you install? Was it easy? Any drilling necessary? Do the steering wheel controls still work? Can you see all the eco stuff and maintenance stuff with it? I've thought about it, but sounds like it's easy to break. Maybe I would do it if I were installing one of those dash rails at the same time.

Yep I thought the exact thing..but at the same time,I'm glad it was. Makes my color that much more rare. Took my dealership a week to get mine in from another dealership because of that lol

I went with the DDM kit, plug and play, work great and only cost about $50. Winter is starting now, so it should be interesting to see how they perform in the -20 degree weather.
For android I did the Joying Corolla headunit, I have a big thread about it here

I traded my 2017 TRD OR DC4x4 for my current 2019 TRD Pro. The 2017 was a lease and had about $1500 in damage (retail value not what a dealer would pay I'm sure) to the side from some rock rash. Dealer offered me $1k over my lease buyout and sold me the Pro for under MSRP with a bunch of extras. I also wanted the radar cruise control and the leather which was not available on the OR in 2017. Basically, deal made sense at the time.
