    1. Toyota realized that the Access Cab concept had become obsolete, at least in terms of people moving. It’s been usurped by Double Cab.

    2. Instead of killing Access Cab, they evolved it into their work truck model. Toss your shit in the back and go.

    3. A laptop bag, tool bag, and lunch box don’t need their own doors.

    4. Crash worthiness, as discussed.

    5. Cost.

Seems like a bad decision to have a TRD Prerunner in extra cab and no OR. many people want an OR but dont want a DC .... the decision to drop the OR on an Xtra cab and add a trailhunter DC and Pro DC seems not great. I would be willing to bet that there are far more people willing to buy an off road extracab than a trailhunter or PRO. Who wants to pay 55-70k for a 4 banger ... you are not getting very much more for the money ...

No manual transmission either. Toyota offered extended cab manuals for the all years of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Gen but cheap out now all of sudden.

I think a regular cab 8 foot bed would been an option. Offer a lockable storage accessory for keeping stuff dry and safe.

I would have kept at least 1 door and redesign the jump seats so that they take up as little room as possible which they never did anyways.

Henry Ford was onto something when he stated that you could buy a new Ford in any color you wanted as long as it was black. The more options you offer on any model causes them all to cost more. Even those who buy a base truck are paying more than you should to offset the expense of all the different options on other models.

It also means a more profitable company. Companies that are less profitable start cutting corners to save money which results in lower quality and then on top of that they offer sub-par customer service when things go wrong.

These are all things I like about Toyota. When you start trying to offer everything for everybody costs go up and quality goes down.

Been a while since I watched the video of him talking but also believe cost was the other factor.

I think one thing people don't consider is how Toyota's long life cycles affect their decision making. Since Toyota knows this Tacoma will probably be in production the next 8 to 10 years, they have to think about future regulation on top of current regulations (crash test, emissions, etc.). One of the reason the nose of the 3rd gen Tacoma is so long and there is so much space between the radiator and grille was because Toyota THOUGHT that was going to be a requirement in future regulation (in this case it would be for pedestrian collision requirements). It ended up not being the cause, but Toyota did it anyway so they wouldn't have to redesign the front end if the pedestrian collision regs called for that.

I suspect the lack of a 3rd door on the access cab is just Toyota playing it safe so they can crank this Tacoma out for a million years without heavy revision. Even if the access cab meets crash tests in 2024, it might not in 2028 or 2030. I also think the hybrid might eventually be the only option you get on a Tacoma in a few years to address continually tightening emissions regs. Toyota is a conservative company so they try to play it safe. It sucks they are so constrained these days, but they are just following the required rules of the government we elected. If they don't, they can't sell anything.

How is Ford able to offer Super Cab doors with an aluminum cab too?
