Why'd you buy your Sport 4x4 instead of OR ?

I like the black flares on the OR but the hood scoop on the sport. Anyone know if dealership is able or willing to add OR flares to a Sport or sport hood to an OR?

"Trim" hmmm, that is an excellent reason for many things. When I was younger, I did many silly things in persuit of that. I was often attracted to those huge fake hood scoops.

Seriously... is looks the reason for which to pick?

The Off Road has a locking rear differential and the 4WD Off Road has A-TRAC/MTS/Crawl Drive... These things make your truck unstoppable and it can go far beyond most (maybe all) any other factory stock vehicle made!
A fake hood scoop or the colored trim does not. You (in an Off Road TRD) will be pulling your friends up hills or out of stucks instead of your friends pulling you!

I can't fault buyers of the Sport if they did not know the difference between an Off Road and a Sport, but if they are educated buyers... choosing decorations over gearing/ traction... for about the same cost... just baffles me! (It also makes Toyota much bucks because a fake hood scoop is sure cheaper than lockers, A-TRAC, the hydraulic brake booster, etc.)

Okay, back to your original programming! ;)

I didn't lol. I prefer the suspension on the OR, I think it rides better and I drive a sport for a day. I like the scoop though.

Why'd you buy a TRD sport 4x4 instead of OR? Simple, I wanted an access cab. Sport Access Cab is available with the MT, the OR is an AT. The MT is the single best option available.

Whoa whoa, "goes anywhere" the crawl control is far from unstoppable. Many members have reported it.

The trim package is nice on my 2013 Sport, The locker is nice on the Off Road. What I wanted was DCLB. I just couldn't get the best of both in one truck.

I had an manual 07 AC OR for years and wanted basically the same truck with some interior updates. Since they stopped selling the manual in the access cab OR configuration I got the sport. Without even test driving it ... because I trust Tacoma's. I figured if it was the same truck with a little less road noise I would be happy. In retrospect I never used the locking diff in my 07 not even one time. The 4x4 and good manual driving technique got me through some actual dangerous situations when I did dumb things. I will put on my General AT's next winter and I know I will feel limitless just like I did in my second gen. I now have about 7k on the truck and never missed the OR. It's been through some bad winter storms in the Adirondacks and WNY with only stock wheels... It ate ALL of the snow, with out even a little hesitation. I also have to say that I love being able to corner at higher speeds without feeling that body roll. I know my passages appreciate it too.

MTS would be the equivalent to A-TRAC (what I have) and Crawl would be like low range cruise control (I gather). The rear locker is so 2008.... lol. With A-TRAC, the front and rear have 'auto-locking' and really makes the rear locker obsolete, but Toyota kept it for emergency needs. Too bad there isn't more videos of serious off roading using A-TRAC with factory stock Toyotas. I don't expect you all to believe me.

I am currently trying to make the same decision as to which one I want. I have narrowed it down to either getting the Sport 2WD that has the Tech package with JBL audio or getting the Offroad 4WD without the tech package. I don't do much offroading at all and feel like the Sport is the better option for me but all the sport bashing here vs the offroad has me second guessing myself lol

This is an old thread but I find all the comments about the locker being associated to rock crawling kinda funny. Lockers are great for river crossings and uneven terrain and various other types. I know some basic fireroads in Colorado that are washed out so bad you need lockers, no rocks.

Not meaning to bash, just inform.

So many guys I met bought Sports without knowing how much more truck for the same $$ that the OFF ROAD is.

If a decorative hood scoop is more important for the same price as Multi Terrain traction control and Crawl/ A-TRAC or a locking differential, then buy a Sport! Toyota makes them both and both are GREAT! Just know the difference the same $$ will buy.

I do appreciate all the information on this forum and have been doing research for the last 2 months.

My last truck was a 2007 Colorado Z71 with 4WD and I may have used it twice in the 10 years I owned it. I live in Florida near the gulf so we get no snow and most roads are flat. I will occasionally take it to some state parks and the beach but never needed to engage 4WD.

My reason for the Sport 2WD is why pay for the 4WD and get the OR that comes with crawl control and rear locker if I'm not someone that is going to ever really use it.

Basically I would be choosing the Sunroof, Hood Scoop, color matched bumpers, BSM, rear parking sonar, and JBL audio vs the crawl control, rear locker, upgraded offroad suspension and 4WD

    decisions decisions lol

    This is fair.

I don't like how the OR looks and don't go off roading. However, the OR does give you more bang for your buck.
