Why'd you buy your Sport 4x4 instead of OR ?

No, it has the Crawl Control and MTS dial and buttons there. The manual and the 2 wheel drive Off Road have the sunglass holder

Doesn't look like he needed it on that trip. Looks like he did just fine.

OP, I bought the OR specifically for the locker, as I travel to some very remote areas and just wanted the extra assurance. I will probably never use the crawl as I have many years of experience getting stuck and MANY more years learning how to get unstuck.

The sport 4x4 will probably be absolutely fine for you. Nice wheels, hood scoop, less plastic chrome. Buyers remorse is silly; if you had the OR and never used any of it, it would be a waste. I have been through quite a few miles of flooded out muddy areas of road/ditch and used 4 low just fine: never needed or used the locker yet. Wished the crawl was not up on the roof as I have no place to store my RAY BANS.

Yeah I'm aware of that, so it doesn't only pertain to the sport models.

I have to agree with a few others...people should buy what they like and fits their needs. Never understood why seeking validation from others suedes people. If you off road and want the features of the off-road...buy it. If you like the looks of the sport and don't off road...buy it. Plain and simple.

I get that and normally am very sure-footed in my decisions..but with a perceived equal msrp it's like Dell releasing a computer, it's the fastest computer you can buy and its 2000$, but if you don't game and dont need the processing power they will sell you one with half the processing power since you don't need the rest for a steal at 2000$. But they'll put it in a white case that cost 50cents more instead of black case..

See why I wanted to know if people actually cared that much about the scoop/ color matching?..

For us we wanted a long bed and were wanting to avoid ordering.. So in the end I doubt I would of found a LB off-road without ordering. I just hated to realize (my fault for lack of research and listening to a brochure/salesmen) after the fact, the true differences..if they were the same price I might have considered ordering...

But looking around I see that most dealers are marking the Off-road up higher than the sports. The Off-road is a better vehicle and there's is no argument there. I feel some of the OR drivers got offended like I was trying to downplay the OR's advantages..no way...

In the end, my question really was..hey i bought a Sport instead of OR because of availability, how screwed am I going to be on rough roads?! That question is answered.

AFAIK any double cab with a tech package will have the moon roof in the trims that have the tech option. I got the TRD Off Road 4x4 for extracting my prerunner and race truck when something breaks. The crawl control, locking differential, and ATRAC are for when I really get suck out in the shit. 20160303_154228_HDR.jpg

But this thread is about the 4x4 Off Road. Most 4x4 Off Roads do not have a sun glass holder because most of them are automatics

    For me:
    1. It was actually available, and I was looking for something before the end of the year in November/December.
    2. I like the color keyed over fenders and front bumper over the black on the OR.
    3. I don't do a lot of intense off-road. Never got stuck in my Tundra with no locker, figured I'd probably never engage it even if I had it. Maybe when I get up on some trails later in life like I plan to, but still. Mostly in snow, or driving through fields.
    4. I got a deal on the Sport when I was originally looking at an SR5, but the Sport they had came in that same day and had a bit of a story behind it (4,000 miles on it "new") so I got a better deal on it. Plus it had the better Entune system, keyless entry/push start system, LED DRL, etc...

I could care less about the scoop though. And if there was a DCSB, Red, TRDOR 4x4 available anywhere around me, I might have gone with it too. It just wasn't a big deal to me. I also don't mind the sport suspension, takes long sweeping onramps quite nicely :), for a truck that is.

I bought the sport because I like the look better. The painted flares and lower part of the front bumper. And I like the look of the hood. My truck will never go off roading so the locker and crawl control was little to no importance to me. I am sure the sport will do just fine in winters thats why I have it

Hood scoop, painted fender flares and taller wheels for better highway driving. I would never use the OR equipment. I still think the OR's are great just not my best fit.

I think most of us will agree the OR is the better value. A hood scoop and fancier wheels dont compare to the OR upgrades. You get more for the same money, but as some have said, they are harder to find, and probably harder to actually get for the same price as the Sport.
But, if someone who really knows could tell me the OR drives just as nicely on asphalt as the Sport, and I can find one for the same price without having to wait months for it, Im sold, even if I never use the features. At the very least, when I go to sell it in 5-6 years, It'll probably be worth more.

Fair enough. I totally understand. I don't think you could go wrong either way. Both trucks are very capable rigs and hold their resale value VERY well. The point of forums is to ask questions and get opinions. In my opinion (others will disagree) you can't go wrong with either model. Congratulations on the new truck!!

Yes the Offroad comes with a sunroof option.

All you have to do is throw in a locker. You don't really need crawl control, it's nice to have if you know zero about off-roading, but you won't be on tough stuff anyway if you're at that level. You can always learn how to properly drive the vehicle Offroad.

Screwed? Nah. Just buy aftermarket suspension. ToyTec Boss kit is a good option. Icon has a setup out and so does Fox I think. Suspension problem solved.

I test drove both and personally found the Offroad more comfortable on the road. I found the Sports suspension to be too soft.

It's because the dudes with there OR's need to justify buying something that they'll most likely never use by making the rest of us inferior. I mean really, how many of these guys really do any hardcore off-roading where they need to use that stuff? I'm not saying that there aren't those guys, but the ones yelling the most about the OR being superior are probably the guys who will enevr use the stuff on their truck and it stays squeaky clean because it's never rolled over a rock.

I agree, the ones going out of their way to bash sports most likely fit the category you describe. It's pretty rediculous. This is a Tacoma forum and we have people bashing other Tacoma enthusiast based on their model. Really? Pretty pathetic.

I think the real hardcore off-road guys probably laugh at the stock OR's because they either buy a lower end model and outfit it in a way that's far superior to the OR for less $$$. I mean really, if I had $40k to spend on a truck that I was going to take on some really nasty stuff, there's no way I'd buy a new OR. I'd either buy an older truck and build something superior and more capable or do what I previously mentioned and buy a lower end model and pimp it out. Who takes their $40k daily driver off-road on stuff that extreme? That's just plain dumb.
