Domes are too but theyre ecm controlled. As evident by the many threads here with issues. But I appreciate you posting actual facts and not opinions.

My point being the electrical system is either sparking or not. Key on is mostly irrelevant for an electrical issue.

I do know that when refueling at sea, the smoking lamp is out through out the ship. I don't smoke because I am a great athlete, once scored 6 points in a pickle ball game, but anyway I know that the smoking lamp is out.

When I was about 15 years old l walked past a small bonfire with an empty 1-gallon metal gas can, the vapors from the can actually ignited and it was like a giant blowtorch going up my hand and arm, not fun.

Many years ago, I worked at an auto recyclers... we were disposing of old fuel tanks and one of the guys didn't like my method of running them over with the forklift to crush them down... he decided it was smarter to get the gas powered cutoff saw that we used to cut the cars up. First tank had been on the shelf and empty for close to a decade. He puts his foot on the tank to support it and starts his cut. A second later he is laying on his ass with the tank blown open. Even empty for a decade was enough to be dangerous. He ran them over with the forklift after that.

not trolling. last i worked with them in the last 6 months, most had switched to the little nicotine pouches that go under the lip--they indicated the pouches lasted longer than cigarettes... but 2 years ago, they were all smoking while working. yes, it's not right, but they made their own choices.

i don't smoke, and i shut the vehicle off while fueling. i'm also adamant about positive pressure in confined spaces as well. but if i didn't have bad luck, i wouldn't have any luck at all!

So far the only actual reason shared for leaving the vehicle running while fueling has been cold temps. There’s one guy simply debating the necessity of the practice, but what’s everyone else’s excuse?
You’re smarter than everyone? You’re better than everyone? You’re punk as fuck and break every rule possible? You’re trying to prove your dad wrong? It’s a conspiracy perpetrated by automotive companies to wear out your starter?

This practice just smacks of “I’m the main character” attitude. It’s inconsiderate and unnecessary. You gain nothing by taking that risk, regardless of how minuscule it is.

I think what most people are missing is, if you allow smoking while pumping, it introduces dumbasses to light their cigarette/cigar while pumping. While the cherry from them may not do anything, the flame from a lighter or match is enough to put you in your forever bed.

Electrical sparks can also cause combustion to occur (as evident from us using spark plugs in our engines), which is also why signs at the gas station tell you to touch off on your vehicle to discharge any static electricity and not to use your phone. Sliding out of your seats when getting out of your vehicle, reaching into your pockets, etc. all cause tribocharging. Tribocharging is caused by two materials rubbing together. Static electricity/tribocharging can reach in excess of 5k volts, even up to 15k if the conditions are right. Lower humidity, which is typical with lower temperatures, allows more tribocharging and can increase the voltage you or other objects build up. A static spark (any electric spark actually) is composed of oxygen and nitrogen molecules that have ionized, so it must be pretty fuckin' hot, even if it is only 1μ second. Also, look at your gas grill. Does the igniter work on the first spark? Typically no, but it does eventually work. Just because you haven't had an issue doesn't mean it is safe to smoke or run your engine while pumping gas.

I assume you're talking about me which is fine. In what may be an internet first I agree with what people are saying and will change my habit. I still don't think leaving the car running makes the chance of fire any greater but it certainly doesn't lower it.

And truth be told I had a few beers after dinner last night and was more bored than anything.

If I'm the main character, I'm stuck in a Hallmark version of a horror movie.

Aren't all Hallmark movies horror movies? I get scared when the girlfriend suggests watching one.
