Wife green lighted me getting a Gen3

She has had 2 new cars since i drove my brand new 09 Taco off the dealers lot. She felt I deserve a new truck since mine us now 10 years old and 100,000 miles. Very cool of her. But I had to decline. I just love my truck too much. A new one just wouldn't be the same. This one has my personal touches on it.

Anyone else 100% satisfied with their current Taco this much?

I mean I like my truck but it's also simple,
which might be good in some ways and bad in others

Only time I've been in a 3rd gen was hopping in them to check it out on a dealership showroom floor when walking through to pick up some parts from the parts dept,
and I have to admit they look really nice. The interior looks up to par with modern vehicles
I feel like I've seen some former Tacoma owners switch over to SUV's, leading me to wonder if that's the upgrade and not a newer Taco
such as Lexus GX's, 4Runner's Land Cruisers, etc.

Compared to a 3rd gen, the "features" of my 2nd gen are a steering wheel and seat belt

Yep - drove a gen 3 and keeping my 09 with 157k. Mine drives better and all the Toyota mistakes have been fixed, well as soon as I finish repainting the hood and roof.
They look OK not much changed really except that front end is ugly - not sure what the design crew was smoking. I'll wait for the Gen 4 as hear 2021 redesign possible so....

In the same boat. Mines a 2010 with 155k. I could write a check for a new Gen 3 today, but I have zero desire to replace my awesome second gen!

I'm with you guys. I'm driving an '06 so it's getting up there in years but still runs as good as the day I bought it. No plans to move on to another newer truck. My wife was driving an '04 Sienna that we just sold for a newer SUV. I hope we have the same good fortune with the SUV as the Sienna. It was a trooper.

OP - I had a 2015 with 235k on it (company vehicle) when I was told by my company that I needed to get a new one.

I now have a 2019, it’s a nice truck with some better features but all in all it doesn’t compare to the 2015 as far as ride quality which is most important to me. I’m not a big fan of the 3.5 engine at all.

Also, oil changes are so simple in a 2nd gen, only took me 10 minutes. At 50k miles annually, you could imagine how often it needed done. That said, 3rd gen oil changes suck!

Smart move you’re making by hanging on to the one you have. Good luck to you....

Just because of 10 years and 100k miles? That’s almost nothing. Change all your fluids and keep it forever.

There are some nice interior features on 3rd Gen but I just can’t get over the “big mouth” look of the 3rd Gen lol. The 2nd Gen also drives so much better IMO. I’m keeping mine.

I was riding with my friend in his 2018 Tacoma and we were towing a boat through the mountains. I had read some owners of 3rd gens complain about lack of power and constant shifting of the automatic transmission but I couldn't detect any lack of power problem from the passenger seat so I asked him "how's the power of your truck while towing?"
He said "I can't tell the boat is back there".

I discovered the same lack of an issue when I put 37's on my 2nd gen truck. With all of the whining I've read online about the lack of power prior to a regear with 33's I expected my truck to have a 0-60 of a minute long, nope the tires slowed it down a half second on a 0-60 and it still can spin the back tires on pavement.

But the 2018's dash and stereo, such a huge improvement over a 2006. They still have horrible seats and shitty brakes though hahahaha

Drive a 3rd gen. for a couple hours and get back to us on what you think of the power and transmission, especially around town.

Hell ya! Bank what you’d pay for a new one. Keep up the care and maintenance for the ‘09 and it’ll be good for 100s of 1000s miles more.

It pulls a fairly heavy 19' boat with a 150 hp outboard on it with zero issues. I'm not sure what others expect out of a mid size truck but I'd be happy with a 3rd gen with that level of towing performance.

As far as the transmission constantly shifting I'd ignore it just like I do in my 2nd gen. It's not like it's an early automatic transmission with an overdrive that had reliability problems with shifting in and out of overdrive (first gen 700R4 and EOD). They're designed to shift like that for optimal fuel mileage which is due to our government demanding manufacturers do what the majority of the public wants irregardless of the consequences, consequences like constant shifting.

I've always loved the whole process of buying a new vehicle. But I'll never buy another one as long as l have my 2012 Tacoma. I bought just over 2 years ago with 129,000km (80,000 miles). Now it has 158,900kms (Just under 99,000 miles).
l know it's going to last me a very long time. I don't care that it doesn't have the most modern interior, or the latest gadgets. I nevery cared about that kind of stuff. I just care that it's comfortable and reliable. Which it is!!!!

When it comes time to replace it. I sure hope that l can find another 2nd Gen. Buts that's just my preference in vehices.

    My thoughts exactly!

My 13 is paid off, has 103k miles on it, does 99.9% of what I need, super easy to maintain and is simple enough that I can work on it without issue.

    Me.
Would not even consider the new Taco. Every once in a while I get someone who offers to trade. No thank you. In fact, once this one gives out, I will look seriously at the other makes being offered at that time. Tonka has gotten way too comfortable resting on their laurels IMHO.

I have a 2014 TRD OR and have no desire to upgrade to a 3rd gen. IF I were forced to, it would be a TRD Off Road, access cab with a six speed manual.
But nope, I plan on keeping mine for a long time. I've been meticulous with my PMs and spray the frame fairly often. I don't even have a door ding on mine yet.
Plus, mine's that beautiful Spruce Mica. It's my favorite color of any vehicle I've ever owned.
