    Handgun? Longgun?

Either way. Rim fire. The ubiquitous.22lr.

Got any friends that shoot? 9mm is good start for pistol. 22 for rifle is ok also.

My oldest son will be shooting for the 1st time this summer. Gonna let him try my .22 bolt action for his first time. Cant think of an easier gun for him to learn on. While also being safer for the fact that he cant just mash the trigger and fire over and over.

Try a baretta 9mm. It was one of the first hand guns I fired and it was good experience.

For what use? Home defense? Concealed carry? Target shooting at the range? Hunting?

A good place to start would be go to a local range that rents firearms, and try some out. If you have any friends or family that have weapons that the ranges do not, see if you can borrow them or go shoot with them. See what you like and don't like about each one. Try to find something that both of you are comfortable with.

What works for me, and my use case, doesn't necessarily mean it will work for you or yours.

    .22 is a good learner's caliber.

What is the intended use for the gun? If it's just to start shooting for fun then I'd agree with the .22. If you are getting something with intentions of moving toward self/home defense then maybe consider a revolver-I would suggest a .357 since you can practice with .38 which has much less recoil and noise. And aside from the "airweight" carry guns, a steel frame 3 or 4" barrel revolver will do well in taming alot of recoil as well.

Go to your local gun shop and browse different stuff. Handle it and get a good feeling for how it feels in your hands. Determine what you want to use it for as well... home defense, plinking, or just something to learn on. As others have suggested a .22 rifle or pistol is a great starting caliber to practice with. Ammo is everywhere and dirt cheap. I'd suggest something like a Marlin .22 rifle, Ruger .22 rifle, or a .22 pistol if you want to go that route.

Also if you have a local range near you see if they rent stuff. You can often go and try different models and calibers to see what fits your style and needs. You could also sign the wife up for a beginners training class as well to get her familiar with the mechanics/ safety stuff.

+1 on the 22lr, super easy to shoot and extremely fun for plinking and you can mod the shit out of them and it even comes in pink. Not to mention very affordable, I have a henry survival 22 rifle (under $300) my next 22 is going to be the ruger backpacker 22. Also 22 rounds are extremely cheap so it's a cheap gun to shoot.

For those who say the 22 has no balls, it's supposedly a favorite for the Israeli mossad when they do assassinations

out shooting in the woods one day and my buddy handed me his 870 and said "try this one"

3.5" super magnum 2 ounce slug ... the recoil bashed the trigger guard into my index finger tendon so hard it was sore for 2 months.

I agree a .22lr is a good starting point for a rifle. Very very light recoil.

My gf has a 9mm Glock 48 and loves it. Very little kick. I would recommend a Glock 43, 43x or 48 to start off with in the pistol category.

After a little bit of rifle shooting, have her try an ar-15 which is a .223/5.56.
