I recently traded in my 06 tundra and my 15 focus st to get my first Tacoma. My wife had a gen 2 and loved it so I am trying the gen 3. This is my 2017 Tacoma 4x4 OR double cab build.
    I just broke 1000 miles
I have already tried the 4x4 twice nothing super deep just a little fun.

I plan on doing a small lift and tires in the future but I will wear out the stock tires first they have done well in the mud and in the rain so winter will be good to go. First I will be doing basic stuff so my build will be slow. Unlike my builds from before I had kids lol[IMG]

This little plug n play shift controller will make your truck so much more enjoyable to drive. It is much cheaper than a tune, for me this fixed the transition annoyances.

Lets start my first review. I started by ordering 6.5 infinity speakers. they had a good sale going so i ordered them first. I mounted them in the front door while i waited to order the correct size for the front. My next paycheck hit and i couldn't wait any longer, I ordered the Plug-N-Play tweater set from Amazon and a set of JBL GTO 6x9. The stock speakers in this truck SUCK! I did not get the JBL Toyota system but i still expect more from a system that is marketed as premium... after looking up the info on the better JBL system i am glad i didn't spend the money because it is still very low quality. Shame on you Toyota. So back to the point. I have now switched the JBL GTO in the front. The two speakers have similar clarity, if i had to pick i do think the Infinity still has better clarity. What the JBL is lacking is minor though and is easily made up for with base. Oh so much base! I had a 8in sub in my focus and it did not put out this much base. As far as the dash goes, removing the crap small mid speakers and putting in real tweeters fixes the staging of the sound and makes it much more accurate sound delivery. I did not order any of the wire adapters for the doors but i will say it would have made it much easier. i did however get a cheap adapter plate for the 6x9 off amazon and recommend it. It didn't fit the door perfect but i small screw into the sheet metal with a screw clip fixed that. The rear speakers I mounted in the original speaker housing

    Did you buy an amplifier?

I have a 17 Offroad without the jbl speakers and boy is it weak. I'm thinking about replacing the speakers but idk if I will need an amp too and if that will work with the stock head unit.

    No amp!
I purchased all 3 ohm speakers so they are more than load enough. You can buy the 2 ohm, infinity makes them and calls them the load speakers. But I don't think you need it! I can't turn it up past 40 without it being to much. Just stay away from 4 ohm. That is when you will need an amp. I did the 4 ohm infinity cappa on my focus with a 400watt amp and found it not necessary, save the money and go 3 ohm!! They sound just as good!

For the record you can set an amp up on any stock head unit you just have to buy more crap. The only way I would hook an amp up to this particular head unit would be for a sub. And at this point in my life I have become old and don't care to rattle my whole car. The JBL GTO that I put in the front doors make enough bass to rattle the truck as is. But like I said I'm old you might still be in your twenties and care about that stuff.

While I am still in my late 20s, I had a heavy bass binge when I was in high school so I do not want to deal with subs again. With that being said I still enjoy a nice clean bass, particularly more than what the stock system can do, but no where near eyebrow moving sub bass. With that being said, how difficult was the install? And if you don't mind me asking roughly how much did it all cost. I am looking to upgrade my system because I was initially upset that I couldn't find any tacomas with the jbl audio, but after seeing what you said it sounds like the better route is to upgrade it yourself.

Thread title got my attention, so I stated it out loud, my wife said huh? I repeated it and got a weird look. I then said how you traded in a Tundra and Focus, she said, good those needed to be traded for something better any ways. So at least you have my wife's approval, so carry on now.

When we moved to the city I didn't need the car for gas mileage any more and the tundra was over 170k mileage so I was ready for a new truck. Not that the tundra was breaking or anything it ran great and all I have ever done was normal maintaining. Thing was solid. But it didn't get that good of mileage. Tacoma isn't much better lol. But no joke when I was debating what to get next.two month process I was indecisive she said maybe you should get a van it would be more comfortable.... I laughed out loud. Don't know how serious she was but she never said it again She has never tried to tell me what to get but she definitely has a different idea on what to drive. The only car I have ever owned that she openly disliked was my WRX.

If my wife says we need a mini van, I'm asking for my wife back. Can't even get her to entertain a 4 runner, she says way to fucking big.

Yeah, the BBQ/Smoking thread is awesome. Just a bunch of knuckleheads in the Pitfaced BBQ rub thread, though. :anonymous:

I am the slow cook. I don't do much outside the smoker or a crock pot.

Nice. I had an 08 wrx that was a money pit also and I traded in my 15 focus st (which was a complete pile of crap) for my gen 3.

Yeah I got my st thinking it could be practical since I was having a kid and still fun and it wasn't what I expected. I think ford did a good job marketing it and not that good of a job building it.

Exactly. I did an 1800 mile road trip with my wife and two kids last year they did fit but it was really tight.

Once my daughter went to a non carrier seat she barely fit. And my wife didn't like me putting her in the tundra because it was an access cab. Even though she fit better lol
